On the third of July, the North and South continued battling on Culp's Hill. This time it was more focused on Cemetery Ridge: when 12,000 Confederate soldiers advanced to the center of the Union's army. The Union's rifle and artillery gave Lee no choice but to retreat the army to Virginia. After the three-day battle, a total of 51,000 soldiers from both armies were injured or killed. And despite the conflict between the North and South, Lincoln still honored the ones who were lost in battle in a ceremony at the Gettysburg's Soldier National Cemetery and continued with the iconic Gettysburg Address.
