The title of the novel I read was Unbroken. Laura Hillenbrand is the author of Unbroken. My rating of the book is 8. This is a book about the life of an Olympian, Louie Zamperini, in World War II. Louie's plane crashes, and he battles the sea and Japanese POW camps. This is a great book because it allows you to better understand what it was like to be in World War II. Laura was able to really make Louie's story come to life.

Never Give Up Hope

The real life lesson in Unbroken is no matter what happens you can never lose hope. Lots of troubles came to Louie and other characters in the novel, but Louie always had a shrivel of hope in his heart left. Louie and his best friend Phil survived 47 days on a raft in the middle of the ocean. They were unseen by several planes, shot at by the enemy, attacked by sharks, starved to the brink of death, victims of the sun, and worst of all had a thirst so bad they drank blood. After all of that Louie never lost all his hope. Whether it was solving math problems, or catching a fish, Louie always found a way to gain hope. With his hope, he was able to find land or a ship for that matter.

The Conflict

Louie faces many conflicts in Unbroken, but one of his biggest struggles is with a guard nicknamed the Bird. The Bird was an insane Japanese guard that worked in two of the POW camps Louie was in. The Bird hated Louie for no reason except for being jealous of him. The Bird constantly put Louie through tough physical challenges and beat Louie. This was one of Louie's main external conflicts, but it also caused a major internal conflict. By the time Louie was in the POW camps he had already lost most of his hope. When the Bird continuously beat Louie and made him feel like he was nothing but dirt his thoughts went to is it worth living anymore. The Bird caused a lot of Louie's troubles in life, but none of them were able to break him.
