I think I am a ten. I am a first year teacher teaching middle school resource. I want to use more technology in my room, but I don't have the tools in my room. My students have their own computers, but I do not know what I can use to work with them in order to probe them for their goals and instruct them.

A year ago, before coming to my first ITEC Conference, I was pretty confident in my ability to integrate technology into the classroom, and I got my eyes OPENED up, and realized I had a long ways to go as a learner and teacher. I have enjoyed the experiences, and it knocked me down to myself thinking I was a 1 or 2. A year later, here I am, and I feel like I have grown, but still an up hill battle I am walking.

If you keep differentiated instruction and best practice in mind you think of outcome and then use whatever tech tool/resource will help you achieve that.

I use technology in my classroom but sometimes I get comfortable with what we know instead of pushing the boundaries.

We do need to forgive ourselves for those level 7-9 lesson days. Getting to know the tools is essential to getting to those 1-2 level lessons.

Last year I was given a single sheet of skills to teach that were not connected to a context. This year I am trying to teach those skills in a larger context. I am still having students use the same tools as their peers.

We need to remember that technology was not designed to be used in education. We adapt technology to achieve learning outcomes.

I teach math so I have not done much with this yet, but I am all for kids doing whatever they need to learn.

2/3 as far as choice, but never thought about having the students defend what tool they chose or why!

In my classroom, there really isn't any way for my students to be mentors for eachother except in the sense of seeing the other students working on their goals and they need to be doing the same. Plus, some of my students have an issue doing what they are supposed to be doing and not just sitting there or ignoring me.

4? I've been trying to promote a mentor/coaching atmosphere with our learning but teaching the communication of coaching has certainly been a challenge with my 3rd graders.

I feel like I'm probably at a 7 or 8 on this one. I try to encourage them to discover things on their own, but I think they often default to the "I don't know" and they want you to just give them the answer. Getting away from that mindset/model is difficult--for them, and for me.

As a resource teacher, it would be easy if I just gave my students the answers and not let them struggle, but I try really hard to help them figure it out. I usually have them work on it and if they get stuck then they can come ask for help, but I do have a few students who struggle all the time and it can be worse to have them sit there and not do anything, than to work with them to get the work done. When they do probes for me or working on a test, I try to stay out of helping them as much as possible, but it can be hard sometimes.

1 - I will let students struggle, but am constantly fearful that if you don't catch the struggling student at the right point, then they don't want to put in the work to recover. If you catch them at the right time it can be powerful, but it's a dangerous game to play.

I am not sure how to answer this. During Homecoming that is happening this week, my students helped me put together our door where we put letters on white paper about how our school is a pack and we need to support our pack so we wanted the students, teachers, and staff members of the school to write something positive and supportive, but it is something that I came up with and organized. I think I may do something where the kids make gifts for the people in the nursing home down the street. Hmmmmm.....I am thinking some good ideas.

When I did one of my field experiences in Muscatine with their alternative program, pretty much EVERYTHING the kids did at that school was geared toward their upcoming Health Expo. They researched communicable diseases, solicited local businesses (got free flu shots for the community, had reps from a bike shop, etc.), modeled contagion statistics, etc... and then held a Health Expo for the entire community. It was AMAZING and everyone was on board. It was so incredible and I can't WAIT to have my feet under me enough to start making this happen.

I always allow choice in my classroom. On Fridays, I call them fun Fridays because its the one day where students can play music without headphones, they can play games, sometimes we would play a dance song and dance to it. I also have a classroom management where the students earn money for doing certain expectations, but they have a choice to do the expectations or not and they have the choice to write down the money and they have a choice on what they can buy.
