Also, Joana can be seen as sympathetic. This can be seen on page 246, which states,

'"Her smile suddenly faded and she looked straight at me. She leaned over

my cot and took both of my hands in hers. Her eyes, filled with compassion,

began to well up. Joana then whispered the words I had waited so long to

hear. I knew Mama would say them if she could. But Joana spoke them,

slowly and deliberately, clutching my hands between hers.

“Emilia, I am so very sorry.”

My chin began to tremble. My throat tightened. I nodded and warm

tears spilled down my cheeks.

“I’m sorry,” she repeated, squeezing my hands.

“Me too,” I whispered."'

This supports that Joana is sympathetic, because she felt bad for Emilia. Joana apologizes to Emilia about August, not once, but multiple times. Joana understands that Emilia used August as a lie to cope with trauma. Also, we can see that Joana's eyes were filled with compassion. This shows that she cares a lot about Emilia.

In conclusion, Joana is characterized as insightful and sympathetic. Joana cares a lot about Emilia and is very supportive.

Joana is characterized as kind and compassionate because in the book salt to the sea by sepetys page 246 it states that "Her eyes filled with compassion, began to well up." also it says "She brought me pea soup and sat at my bedside." this show how kind and caring she was for Emilia after she had her baby. Also it shows how sympathetic she is for her group she sat beside her and brought her pea soup that shows you how much she cares about her group -Deziel

¨ Joanna wanted me to walk a bit but I did not want to ¨ (pg 246). this shows Joana is helpful and caring because she helped Emilia Deliver her baby and helped her get better.

Another piece is from page 246, Emilia says,

¨She brought me pea soup and sat at my bedside¨. This shows that Joana is also very loving and kind.- KAILYN

In page 246 it states, "Whenever she left, she returned quickly.". This evidence from the text tells us that Joana is really worried about Emilia and I believe she want to keep her company, so that she doesn't feel alone. Joana felt worried about Florian's wound in the book as well. She couldn't stop worrying about his wound. This also means that she is very worrisome.

Joana understands Emilia very well and is able to comfort her using knowledge the she already knows about Emilia. On page 246 it states, "She brought me pea soup and sat at my bedside.". With this piece of evidence from the text we can assume that Joana is acting more than just one of her friends.

Another trait is that Joana is very Loyal to Emilia and her friends because in the book the Author states "She brought me pea soup and sat at my bedside. Whenever she left, she returned quickly" This shows me that Joana does not want Emilia to be alone for too long because Joana really cared for Emilia and wanted her and her child to be safe here on the boat. She is also very Supportive because the Author states "Joana looked at me differently now. She understood" and "Joana then whispered the words I had waited so long to hear. I knew Mama would say them if she could. But Joana spoke them, slowly and deliberately, clutching my hands between hers, "Emilia I am so very sorry"

This shows how supportive Joana is because she has been with Emilia the whole time when she found out, It also shows how she might know what Emilia is going through, all the pain from the birth.

In the End Joana is a very Lovely, Caring, Loyal, And Supportive Friend because how much she has cared for Emilia through this whole journey and does not want to leave until the end, And that she even helps care for the child and bring the baby to Emilia whenever she wants, Which I don't think anyone else in the whole world would do it but Joana is different. In the book Joana is my favorite Character Also, Also especially Joana being a 21 year old woman helping a 15 year old Emilia is very good because it shows how Mature Joana is for her age.

i think that Joana was a type of character that showed a lot of support and was very kind hearted towards emilia and many other characters in the book, we can use many examples to show this like, when she heard a explosion before she crossed the ice and wanted to help any injured people, or when she helped florian with his injury without knowing him. But the best way she showed kind and supported a different character was when she delivered Emilia baby. joana wanted to get help, to call the other doctor. But when she looked at Emilia she didn't want to leave this teenager alone in pain so she stayed at her side and helped emilia to have a baby. joana said to herself that "Thing were moving to fast. I wanted to run for Dr. Richter but couldn't leave Emilia. She was completely overcome with fear, consumed by pain." and on page 246 she understood what emilia was going through a painful and hard time. joana acted as emilia's mom to help calm her down and make sure that everything will be fine and will work out. this showed how joana was kind to emilia and supported her even in her toughest time.
