Toni Morrison uses Imagery to demonstrate the toughness and the bulkiness Sethe holds in her frame. It is stated when Morrison states "It took him a while to realize that his legs were not shaking because of worry, but because the floorboards were and the grinding, shoving floor was only part of it"(Morrison 21) "The House itself was pitching." (Morrison 21) "While down on all fours, as though she were holding her house down on the ground" (Morrison 21). These quotes demonstrate how Sethe with force and resistance held back a spiritual force from tearing down her house.

Symbolism

"I've never seen it and never will. A chokecherry tree. Trunk, branches, and even leaves. But that was eighteen years ago. Could have cherries too now for all I know" (Morrison18). Sethe exaggerates as she describes the scars on her back. There is not literally a tree growing, it is a symbol that represents all the scars she has from when she was beaten when in slavery.

Simile

"And the wrought-iron maze he had explored in the kitchen like a gold miner pawing through pay dirt was in fact a revolting clump of scars. Not a tree, as she said"(Morrison 25). This simile is a thought Paul D has as he is looking at the "tree" Sethe said was on her back. The purpose of this simile is to compare how he explored the "tree" to the way a gold miner paws through pay dirt. As he observes the "tree" he realizes that they are actually a clump of scars.
