Sani Abacha was born in Kano, Nigeria on September 20,1943. He was the Nigerian Military leader and served as head of state in 1993 through 1998. He formally received his training from Nigeria and British military training colleges and just 2 years after Muhammad Buhari became Nigerias leader Babangida overthrew him making him 1st in command and Abacha 2nd in command. This led to all the bad stuff Abacha produced and has caused in Nigeria. He also attended the Nigerian Military Training College as said before and Mons Officer Cadet School before being commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in 1963. Abacha was known for keeping/imprisonment of 2 people a writer and an activist.

Rise to Power

Abacha's rise to power didn't take too long to occur. He quickly rose through the ranks in the Nigerian Military and by 1983 achieved the rank of Brigadier when he assisted Ibrahim overthrow Shagari who was elected for his 2nd term in office. This quickly gave Abacha the power he wanted and Elections were held in 1993 and was won by Moshood who was a candidate supposedly supported by Babangida, who however, "cheated" the elections and set up a civilian "interim' government which Abacha quickly overthrew once again. Although Abacha promised a return to democracy his actions couldnt prove it. So therefore he banned political activity of any kind and fired a large percent of the military and assembled a personal security force of some 3,000 men (similar to what hitler did). He put the former military leader(Abiolo)of Nigeria in jail for treason. But Abacha’s most brutal act was the imprisonment and execution for treason of writer Wiwa and other activists who were concerned with the environmental problems of their country.

Corruption

He is considered as the worlds 4th most corrupt leaders of all time. There is many reasons as to why he was crowned this from his actions. He has attempted and succeeded in overthrowing the government along with Babangida while chief Ernest was in charge. Under Abacha, corruption took Nigeria further into economic collapse than ever before. Besides the collapse of the fuel distribution system, the telephone network was also a problem. The electrical grid was failing. The unemployment rate was at its highest 25% while he was alive. Nigerian journalists who often were jailed for reporting on corruption were careful about what they published about the gasoline scam. He would put anyone who went against him in jail and made them feel punished. His son Ibrahim was also killed in a plane crash unexpectedly in 1996. This has led to him getting even more aggravated .That spring shortly after Delta announced that its operations had reached full production the government declared a ban on the import of barite making Abacha owner of the company and the main provider for the huge Nigerian oil industry, which was a big scam to the Nigerian people.

Effect on Country

His effect on the country was drastic leaving a big percentage of 25% people that were unemployed and most homeless. Abacha's government was heavily criticized of human rights violations, especially after the hanging of Ogoni activist Ken Saro-Wiwi, Moshood and Olusegun Obasanjo were jailed for treason, and Wole Soyinka charged in absentia with treason. Although being a corrupt leader he supported Economy community of West African states and sent Nigerian troops to Liberia to help recover the democracy there. Despite some of the economic stuff he achieved Abacha and his family were still accused of heavily looting no less than $5 billion from the national treasury which caused him to be listed in 2004 as the fourth most corrupt leaders in history though most former Nigerian heads of state, including the current President Buhari who is refusing the claims describing it as unfounded. He has also caused and effected many problems in his country involving gas and petroleum.

Fall From Power

Therefore he slowly started losing the power he once had. In 1996 he was elected chairperson of the economic community of West African states somehow. Abacha deployed Nigerian forces to Sierra Leone to restore the government that was overthrown the year before. Abacha died from a suspected heart attack and was buried the same day. Nigeria transitioned to democratic rule one year later. Just because he died didnt mean the country wasn't at risk he still had looted close to $5 billion into European banks. In 2002 a settlement group had returned close to most of the money back to Nigeria. Therefore Abacha died in the middle of a political struggle over his campaign to remain in power by having himself elected as a civilian president. While Abacha had been seen little in recent months his aides had led a campaign declaring that he was the only man qualified to lead the nation of more than 100 million people. He couldn't continue to keep the power he had and after his death, most Nigerians celebrated out in the streets like it was 4th of July.
