This Jesus was already socially profiled by others before they even knew who he was. Those who do not meet societies’ standards are always thought less of. In this generation there is a certain way you should, how you should smell, what you should do, where you should work. If you work an “unresected job” like ‘being a toilet cleaner’ or being an on-call girl’ you are automatically thought of as lesser of a person within society. With on gonging's of racism, unfair treatment, police brutality, homelessness, and government behavior along with superior assumptions.

I think the author used his poetry to bring attention to a stereotype that has been used to categorize Maori people in today's society. In the text, he cites things that nowadays would be considered "Hori," Hori is a derogatory epithet that has unfortunately been used to degrade and abuse Maori people today. In the text the author mentions things that nowadays would be classified as Hori, things such as one of his disciples being a call-girl and another scrubbing toilets in a railway station, as well as the type of clothes he wears.

Modernised take on Jesus

Mirrors the normal Jesus' story, finding disciples, being persecuted, dying. Recontextualises Jesus' story by replacing the religious persecution with race and class persecution, which is more fitting to 60s NZ. Māori Jesus and his disciples are considered the 'other' in society, not fitting into traditional and tolerated roles in society like working in 'respectable' jobs, mental wellness, etc.
