Infants' nutritional needs are higher per unit of body weight than an adult, and Infants have no nutrient reserves, in the exception of iron. Infants have enough iron to last them for 6 months, or until their bodies develop to absorb iron. Infants need vitamin K, and vitamin D supplements, until their bodies can begin making and properly processing these. If an infant's vitamin D needs aren't met, then rickets may occur, resulting in deformed bones.

Infancy is one of the most crucial stages of development, and vitamin deficiency in infant year may lead to health problems later on in life. Stunted development at a young age may cause improper brain, kidney, and bone development. Providing excess protein and calcium will put stress on a baby's kidneys.
