The island of Hispaniola was originally divided into five territories by the natives. Christopher Columbus claimed the island on his first voyage in 1492. The island was used to assist the Spanish in conquering America. In 1697 France gained control over a third of the island and that part became Haiti, the rest was named Santo Domingo. After Santo Domingo won their independence, they were renamed the Dominican Republic.
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/resources/the-world-factbook/geos/dr.html#field-anchor-introduction-background
