Paulsen, Gary. Woods Runner. vol. 1. Ruth Wright Paulsen. 2010

pg. 120-150
Abner carries the family in the back of his wagon through the dark with Samuel riding in front with him. He tells Samuel they must split up to be safe. He gives him directions to travel west until he reaches a swamp, then to turn southwest and make his way toward Philadelphia. He warns Samuel that there is news of a British defensive line in the area and he may stumble through it. He gives Samuel a compass. Samuel is grateful and thanks Abner repeatedly.

Samuel: very good at hunting and has learned to be on his own since he was young because his parents don't pay too much attention to him.
Mom: is always worried about Samuel but allows him to do his thing because she knows that he is able to take care of himself.
Dad: wasn't introduced as much as the mom has been but he is a hard worker and does whatever he can to take care of the family.
Annie: Annie is a young eight year old girl who was forced to watch British soldiers murder her family in cold blood.
Abner: a man that helped Samuel get to New York and secretly helped the Americans during the war as part of the rebels.
Annies mom: Annie's mom doesnt like it when people are dirty. She owns a farm.
Caleb: invited Samuel into his home to eat when he was hungry. The Hessians killed him.

Fry readability
This book was a 8th grade level book which targets 13-14 year olds. That is what i expected the book to be and I think think the reading level matches the content pretty well.

I thought this book was very interesting and i think that the best part about it was the suspense you had all throughout the book. While Samuel was on the quest to find his parents you always wondering if he was going to succeed or not. I would definitely recommend this book to a lot of my friends and anybody who enjoys reading. I thought it had a really good ending and It was engaging from start to end.

Gary, Paulsen. The woods runner. 2010.
