While this grade 3 students was in my class she was going through the process of being diagnosed with a Communication LD. She had already been diagnosed with Central Auditory Processing issues. Even though her academic struggles were mostly linked to language this students developed anxiety around math. During math activities she would often find herself frustrated to the point of tears, convincing herself that she was unable to understand or complete the task. This self deprecating thought process was often the cause of her inability to understand the math and was most often capable of completing the math when she was calm and had instructions read to here and explained slowly.

This student struggled with this format. Her anxiety would build during the Getting Stared activity and then she would enter partner time already feeling anxious and defeated. She often struggled with the idea of not knowing right away and would not want her partner to know if she did not understand something.

The students would have one language activity (reading or writing) and one math activity. The students would receive it on Monday and would need to return it on Friday.

This students had a real desire to please (both me and her parents). When homework was taken home she struggled with explaining the concepts to her parents. Her mother would try and support her with the homework, however, her anxiety seemed to heighten at home with out the supports of school. Her parents often shared of long bouts of crying and frustration as they tried to complete the math assignments. Instead of supporting her learning it seemed to being causing higher levels of anxiety to do work at home.

My expectations for grade three students is that they are able to use some of their our own self regulation skills to deal with times when they are frustrated, uncomfortable or in need of assistance. If a student was struggling with work, they were expected to let me know by raising their hand. If they were in need of a break there was a calming spot with sensory tools in my classroom and students were able to take a break outside of the classroom (getting a drink, a small walk , etc.)

This students struggled with self-regulation. She would often sit at her desk, without raising her hand for assistance. By the time I would check in she was often already in tears. It would then take an extended period of time to clam her. When the suggestion was made to leave the room for a break or a drink she would share that she felt embarrassed or centered out. During conversations about strategies she could use to get support when she needed it, she would often become even more anxious and have more tears. Her fear of making mistakes had almost paralyzed her ability to be successful
