According to some sources, the island's name originated from the Greek King, Ogynes. This mystical jail serves as a holding place for Calypso as a punishment from disobeying her father, Atlas (A Titan who holds up the sky/heaven). 
     In the Odyssey, Odysseus discovers this mystical island after being trapped at sea for nine days. From his arrival at the island, Odysseus remained on the island for seven years as prisoner to Calypso.
