I would tell my 16-year-old self to study and gain knowledge in something that I am truly passionate about. Learn about as many subjects and concepts as possible and don't narrow your mindset because someone told you what was necessary to live in the real world. I would also tell her to take every task day by day and to realize she is capable of anything she sets her mind to no matter how daunting the goal seems.

Explore different things early and often. It takes a lot of trial and error to find out what you are passionate about and what industries you want to explore in your career. By exploring different industries at a younger age you can start to rule out jobs and careers that you find no interest in and dedicate more time to something you find passion in.

Take time to explore what you are actually interested in. It will be well worth it to invest more of your time developing the skills you are learning in your core classes for your major, instead of focusing equally on your liberal education requirements. For your career, it is important to get the most you can get out of a job position. If there is a promotion at work, go for it. If there is an opportunity to get involved in another organization through work, do it. The most beneficial factor that will help you get more opportunities is to create a large network and utilize it.

I would tell my 16-year-old self to research more on the pros and cons of each career or academic choice I might be considering. It's one thing to stress out about college and it's another to get all the facts about each university of consideration and exactly what they can offer you. It's one thing to feel overwhelmed about choosing a career and it's another to research and experiment with things that are exciting to you.

Your current academic weaknesses will become your greatest strengths; they just require practice. Don't close yourself off to career opportunities you're passionate about because you might fail.

The first piece of advice I would give is save a little bit of each pay check. You don't realize how much adds up when you're out of highschool, which was something i was never taught.
I would also want my 16 year old self to know that it's okay if you aren't in all of the top clubs or be a 3-sport athlete. None of that really made a difference in the college I went to.
I would also advice to prioritize. Think about prioritizing academics over work and over watching a tv show. Putting in the work goes a long way, and people will notice.

I would tell my 16-old-self to stay focus and create clear goals. In order to make decisions that will help me strive in the future, I find it helpful to have something I'm working towards. Whether it's a job I want, grade in a class, or amount of money I want to save, working towards something allows me move accordingly and create a plan. Additionally, I think it's important to remember the importance of staying organized and on top of my work. In high school I would procrastinate assignments. Giving myself more time to complete tasks allows me to think them through thoroughly.

I'm a bit older than most of my peers in this program, and with that, I've had a few more jobs and opportunities.

Realistically, I wouldn't change anything I've done so far. I'm extremely content and happy where I am in both my career and education. It might have taken me a bit longer to get here, but it has shaped me into the person I am.
HOWEVER, if I were to have the exact same outcome but with slightly less difficulty, this is the advice I would give myself:
-If you hate your job, and it is both mentally and emotionally taxing to the point that it is causing suffering in your personal life, quit. It's not worth it.
-Its okay to focus on yourself, your education, and your career. If people care about you, they'll understand that that needs to be your priority for the time being.
-TAKE. EVERY. OPPORTUNITY. You don't learn this until you're 24, and Henry Rollins beats it into your skull, but better late than never .

The career advice I'd give myself at 16 would to be to listen to yourself and your wants instead of listening to what others tell you or expect of you. I think if I would've followed my own career interests when I was 16 rather than listen to what path my parents wanted me to go in, I would've had a better foundation going into those same interests now 5 years later. Exploring your true career interests and hobbies at 16 has a lot lower stakes than it does post grad.
