Coccidioidomycosis is an infection caused by inhaling coccidioides spores from the air. The fungus is common in the southwestern parts of the United States and in Mexico as well as Central and South America. When the spores are inhaled, they give off symptoms similar to the flu and a chance of rashes.

1. The most common way coccidioidomycosis is diagnosed is by blood tests, but doctors may also want X-rays of your lungs and in more extreme cases they may want a tissue biopsy.
2. Treatment of Valley Fever is usually through prescribed antifungals.
3. It is also worth noting that if not treated the symptoms will take a few months to go away.
4. Most people who contract valley fever make full recoveries

1. Coccidioidomycosis fungus only resides in certain parts of the world (Southwestern U.S, Mexico, Central/ South America), so you are not at risk if you avoid those places
2. If you do decide to travel to somewhere with Coccidioidomycosis fungi, avoiding places that are excessively dusty.
3. A great method of prevention is wearing masks in places that may be prone to the fungus. The CDC recommends N95s.
