Talk about how the Mayans used complex math in their calendars. I remember an assignment back in high school that we had to figure out the Mayan sacred rounds.

Invite speakers from different groups (cultures) in STEM to share experiences and cultural influences on their careers.

Promote inclusive STEM learning by building collaborative classroom environments that reflect diverse cultural viewpoints.

Study real world examples of engineering from different cultures to show that engineering can be innovative in all places.

In math, use examples that use real life experiences, like using local grocery prices from different cultural stores to teach equations.

In ELA, encourage students to make personal connections with writing prompts that allow students to share personal culture stories. Adam Whitaker said that "the findings reveal that culturally Relevant poetry writing has the potential to amplify students' voices, increase their writing self-efficacy, and support them in exploring their cultural backgrounds of others" (2023).

In social students, discuss historical events, include stories from students' cultural histories to make content more meaningful. A couple weeks ago, we were talking about Irish culture and a student is from Ireland and thanked us for including her people in the lesson plan!

In science, explain the different cultures that use natural indicators to mark seasonal transitions.

Display world maps, posters of different cultures, and historical figures from a variety of backgrounds.

Set up a board where students can display traditions, holidays, or important symbols.

Provide different learning styles and cultural norms while in the classroom.

Stock your classroom with library books featuring diverse characters.

Partner with local community centers, museums, or historical societies to arrange field trips or invite guest speakers that support the topics the students are learning in class. One field trip I remember in elementary school we took was a tour of the town and its history. We went to the town library, museum, and hidden spots. The town was very small but after that tour, it made me feel more appreciated and connected about the town I lived in.

Leading a community mapping project where students explore the cultural design of their neighborhood by interviewing local residents and presenting their findings. A cool project I made was a map of all the different types of businesses in the town and mapped how they were all connected because of how they support each other locally.

Create service learning opportunities by working on volunteering with local organizations such as cultural festivals, farmers market, or support groups. This gives the students a chance to learn through giving feedback.

Invites members or community members into the classroom to share stories, experiences, or traditions to help students connect to the inclusive classroom.
