Why we do this is to create our own relationship to the subject so that it has meaning to us. This works great with music. When an artist releases their masterworks, one will give the album a listen, decide they like/love it, and proceed to listen, analyze and worship the artist. In Ratliff’s chapter, he talks about how we want to develop a relationship with music like we would with friends. And like our real-life relationships, our connection to music can be clean, short, and ruthless. We want to try to know everything there is to know about what can’t completely be known. Ratliff uses the band the Grateful Dead to explain this concept. Since this band has been around for quite some time and the age we live in allows us to backtrack to hundreds of their songs, someone could discover one of their songs and fall completely in love. They will proceed to try and listen to the band’s entire repertoire, which would take forever, and what to know everything they can about how the songs were written, about the artists, and any other media they can get their hands on to create their own unique relationship with a band that no longer exists. I do this too with my favorite artist AJR. I have listened to all of their songs, watched every interview, and even went to their concert and met them. This was my way of creating a connection to them because their music made me feel like myself and brought out emotions that no other artist could.
