Aqilah Batrisyia
Intan Syaqira
Nurul Ain Syafinaz
Nur Hidayah

Based on our reading, we have found that there is lack of evidence supporting the presence of correct English. Kamm (2015) stated that Standard English is not a correct English and therefore, there is no such thing as correct English. There are only rules of grammar, spelling, vocabulary as well as pronunciation that are widely accepted as the usual form of English. English in every state, country, as well as continent around the world have their own varieties or style of English. Thus, we believed that there is no such thing as correct English although it is widely used as a global language. In addition, we can’t simply say or label any dialect of English as “incorrect” and again, there is only a standard English set for the use of academic writing as well as in a formal setting (Kamm, 2015). Similarly, Bareither (n.d.) argued no English is the perfect English since experts cannot come into agreement of the language usage and pronunciation. She further added, “English has no governing authority that allows or denies how words are spelled, used, and pronounced” and the language itself constantly changes.

As human beings we are living in society which required us to interact with each other in our daily lives. The needs to be understood and to deliver the message prompted language to be used. Language basically is a system of communication where sounds, sign or symbols convey objects, actions and idea. Thus, it helps us to express our feelings, desires and emotions better. With the existence of language, people could understand and deliver message to each other as it is more standardised and practical.

Muhammad Syazwan
bin Subari (1714265)

According to Show (1927), correct English does not exist. Only good English does which accords to the standard form. Standard English refers to the form that has undergone codification and standardization of its rules especially in grammar rulings (Trudgill, 2011). English is the most complex language and that many people from various regions use it differently according to their own varieties and dialects. According to Kamm (2015), English grammar has lots of rules which means it is real rules. It includes things like word order and inflection for number or tense. However, if we are going to talk about “correct English”, this can be expressed in the phrase “standard English” (The Guradian, 2012). The author added that this is because English is run by rules and all of the rules are fixed while linguists cannot have the universal agreement on how the parts and the functions should be analyzed and described. It is also being understood rules to be regulations that are drawn up in some agreed list. So, that is why people most likely to imagine standard English as correct English. But in fact, it is difficult to identify the correctness of the English.

There are some significant reasons that drives language to be used such as the means of communication that is also considered as the primary use of language to convey informative, expressive and directive information. Language also used as an individual and collective identity to reason, express ideas, argue, express thoughts, feelings and actions as well as to maintain its status across the globe.

Salam Dr. Afiza and everyone.

Group members:
Wan Nur Madihah binti Wan Hazahari (1628908)
Nur Amirah binti Zawawi (1625434)
Nur Farhana binti Hamzah (1626680)

Based on our readings, we found that there is no such a thing as correct English. People usually perceive correct English as a sentence that is grammatically or syntactically correct in which they think that is the right and proper English. As mentioned by Rosen (2012), some people usually think Standard English is the correct English whereby it is run by rules and these rules are fixed. In fact, there is no agreed list upon this matter, what we say and write keeps changing and nothing is enforceable. Instead, according to Mazie (2015), language is owned and controlled by everybody and what we do with it seems to be governed by various kinds of consent through the social groups of our lives.

We also stumbled upon an online debate about this issue. It is a debate between Heffer and Kamm (2015). Heffer (2015) stated that standard English is considered as correct English because he perceived it as a standard form of communication in which people use in newspaper or writing so that it cannot be misunderstood. Meanwhile, Kamm (2015) believed that there is no such thing as correct English. The things that people perceived as correct was just an English with sets of rules to followed which is in this case, a grammar.

Language is significantly used as a medium to communicate with each other. It is important in which language helps human to interact effectively that we can convey and express our message and ideas to other people. According to Sirbu (2015), the need to communicate triggers both the occurrence and the development of a language. Thus here, as we can see today, language keeps evolving and there are always new languages that appear from time to time.

We think that is all from us, thank you!

What students learn during school is basically what people called as standard English and there is no doubt that people still use it everywhere, around the globe. Although there are differences between American and British English, both have their own standard English that they have to follow. Kerswill (2006) mentioned in his work that standard English is used at a particular time and place and depends on the social and economic relationships. Also according to Nordquist (2018), people who use the standard form of English will usually be associated with being educated. The existence of standard English is the reason why there is such a thing as correct English. Put it in a situation: if we go for a job interview and we talk to the interviewee using the standard English, they will automatically think that we are professional and well educated because we use the 'correct' form of English; (like what we learned at school). If we use the other varieties of English, we will be perceived as being not educated and rude because we use the 'wrong' form of English towards them. People may use the other form of English, but make sure not to use it towards the professionals, during job interviews, or to the teachers. Learning grammar is one of the main reasons why there is such a thing as correct English because grammar sets up and enforces rules. When we talk about rules, automatically we will know that those who broke the rules will be punished because it is wrong not to follow the rules. Following the rules is definitely a correct thing to do, and no one would doubt that. Same goes to English. Once we have grammar, we will realize that it is essential to follow the rules, or else the words will not appear sensible. Using the correct form of English is indeed important for us, English speakers to convey messages and to be understood. Thus, there is such a thing as correct English. Language is definitely important as we need to communicate with others on a daily basis. Language is needed for us to express our thoughts, feelings and expressions and with language, we are able to communicate successfully and deliver the message that we are trying to convey.

Therefore English is tied to hundreds of cultures and to have the correct English is quite impossible.

However, people yearned for correctness and this is expressed in the phrase “Standard English”. Correct English usually implied perfection and it would be impossible for an individual to claim themselves to speak perfect English however some native speakers would claim that they speak correct English.

"Being in London, I hope, will correct their language," wrote the head of a gentry family in the North East of England when sending his daughters off to school in the capital in 1808 (Collingwood 1957, p. 240). Some may believe people in London speak correct English. Honey (2000) mentioned that London was also a centre of professional education and Oxford and Cambridge were also named in some definitions of the best speech.

Some people may have a view that Standard English is the most formal version of language and is often used in academic paper and they also associate Standard English with Correct English.

Language is the only way for us, human beings to communicate, be it sound or signs convey objects, actions and ideas. Language is the key to human lives and it can prevent from misunderstanding by using it as an instrument to transfer communication among people. Malinowski suggests, language is "the necessary means of communion; it is the one indispensable instrument for creating the ties of the moment without which unified social action is impossible." Language can thus be said to be at the core of humanity.

According to Heffer (2015), there is correct English which is the English used in the newspaper. This is said so because correct English in the newspaper refers to Standard English. However, in contrast with Kamm (2015), he stated that Standard English is not correct English, however, Standard English is the most recognizable English language. Kamm (2015) further explained there is no such thing as correct English as different language has different grammar. In addition, standard and non-standard all have its own grammatical structure.

Other than that, based on our reading, correct English does not exist because according to Linguistic Society of America, languages naturally adapt to their situations of use and also reflect the social identities of their speaker which makes linguistic variation is unavoidable and natural. The Guardian (2012) stated that correct English is standard English. Standard English is needed and useful for certain circumstances, especially in education and professional work. Prescriptivists and descriptivist have different arguments on standard English. Descriptivist believes that although English is changing, it is not changing in debilitating way. In fact, living languages must change, adapt and grow.

Language is one of the important means of communication. We used language to speak and express our feelings, language which comes in various ways is indeed the only means of communication. For example, we have languages that involves speaking and producing sound, which is verbal language and we also have language that does not involves production of sound and it only involves the production of signs which is sign language. Therefore, we believe the thing that drives people into using language is because we communicate to connect with each other and language is the only means to do that. Without language, there’s no way possible that we could exchange emotion, messages and many more. According to Sirbu (2015), language is a fundamental aspect of expressing one’s culture and it is also the proves of historical continuity for human beings

In our opinion, we believe that both prescriptive and descriptive english should be taken seriously. In certain circumstances, correct English is the way to go. For instance, working in an international firm/formal settings (meetings, forums & conference). Here, correct English means free from error. Just imagine if we were to host an intellectual event, and our language use (read: English) is not colloquial. Would it not defeat the whole purpose of holding an intellectual affairs? Moreover, if there is no such thing is as correct English, where do we put the scholars that has been working on English language system from hundreds of years ago? The reason why, we’re able to construct and communicate smoothly across global is because English language has its standard system that can be understood and used by everyone. If we don’t take account of what’s right and what’s wrong how are we able to nurture this language?

However, of course we have to take diversity into consideration. That is why we partially believe that there is also no such thing as “correct English (in certain circumstances). When a person utters the English language in a non – “correct” way, this does not denote the person as someone who is uneducated (Tsehelska, 2006). There is definitely no basis to associate nonstandard English grammar and educational performances. The main reason we use language is simply to communicate with the people around us. Therefore, it is not the matter of how the way we speak the language but as long as the message we wish to transmit is being mutually understood, then that should suffice. Sometimes we have to be more accepting and inclusive of differences and accommodate to the way they speak, even though this means we will be using “incorrect” English in order to increase the solidarity.
