The main character is a young girl who explores themes of racial injustice and moral growth. The main point of the story is about a black man on trial accused of raping a white woman with Atticus finch the narrator's father defending him in the case. This book is on the list for banned books with the reason "Banned and challenged for racial slurs and their negative effect on students, featuring a “white savior” character, and its perception of the Black experience". Many schools especially in younger grades argue that the slurs are offensive and that it challenges its inclusion in school curricula. The main storyline is a rape case which they deemed too mature for students. The other side is that it has historical and educational significance , that we need to talk about difficult issues, and freedom of expression. I do believe that parents and schools can be trying to protect the kids from difficult topics that they may not understand fully. The offense that people took to the book started before it was taught in schools and when it was just for the American reader. But however I think that there is great value in understanding the history of the time behind it and how important it is to not shy away from hard topics like morality, social justice, and the complexities of human nature. This was popular in the Christian communities, they would believe that the books romanticized witchcraft which is incompatible with their beliefs. There is an understanding why those in the christian community would worry about such a big audience of the younger generation reading a book with a storyline of magic. This was one of the first books of its kind in that generation to become world wide known and gain a huge following. The values placed in this beautifully magical world are very common for most novels and some aligning with the christian belief. As you can see the after-affects of this series being read and watched for years has not created a following of occult practices with the readers.
