I really liked this infographic because it breaks down the key aspects of what Humanism as a learning theory consists of. The aspects that especially stick out to me, and that I have tried to use when teaching in the past, are encouraging self-directed learning, focusing on personal interests and passions, and encouraging self-reflection. These are all great ways to ensure students are engaged with the learning material, are actually taking in what is to be learned, and are able to reflect on ways they could improve their own learning.

I think this is a good basis when it comes to understanding the humanism learning theory and how to possibly apply it to your own and to others' learning.

After learning about the humanism learning theory and what it all entails, I was curious as to how to actually apply this to classroom (or library) learning. I found a lot of helpful information on Casel (which is a site that emphasizes the importance of SEL, Social Emotional Learning) that illustrates how to create a supportive classroom for students. This is crucial when it comes to the humanism learning theory, as we want to attend to both students' cognitive state and emotional well-being when it comes to their learning. Creating a supportive classroom environment can do just that.

The video also gives a great quick intro to the beginning of Humanist psychology, touching on the work of Freud, Pavlov, and Skinner in Psycho Dynamic and Behaviorist approaches and how it opposed these previous approaches. I like the combination of visuals, verbal explanations, and direct quotes and find that the utilization of al three helps to paint a really clear picture of the theory.

Humanistic Learning Theory and Instructional Technology: Is Reconciliation Possible?

In this (very old but very relevant to this class) article one of the ways humanism and technology can work together is by providing opportunities for individualized learning experiences (ie: engage with materials at their own pace and offering flexibility and autonomy). Technological tools can support creativity, critical thinking and self-directed learning. Technology can provide the space where students are encouraged to engage with their peers and instructors in meaningful ways. One important point that was made was that in order for this to be successful is that this framework requires intentional design of technological tools and experiences that prioritize the learner's emotional and developmental needs and not just the transmission of content.
