New Learning on Mindfulness

Expectations of mindfulness with elementary students isn't all about sitting still to be calm. Its about them recognizing their experiences and being in touch with the experience. The positive by-product of mindfulness is the feeling of calm. Don't expect mindfulness and calm right away, give elementary students time to develop. When looking for the benefits of mindfulness over time start looking for students who are happier, comfortable in their body, less reactive/aggressive, how they treat each other and how they manage their experiences. Mindfulness is like a string where it pulls things together like helping kids get in touch with themselves, and how to interact with others.

After obtaining all the information from this assignment, I will be trying different strategies to teach mindfulness. At times I'm guilty of doing all the talking at times because I want to get students up and moving to their activity. I definitely need to let the students have more ownership of the lesson and allow a little more time for questions, connections and reflections.
Understanding chronic stress and what it can do to our brain is eye opening. Unfortunately many students are experiencing chronic stress and it's no wonder why they would struggle when their brain is working against them. That's why I feel it's important to teach and incorporate mindfulness exercises and strategies into my PE class.
