Reading for academic purpose

When reading a journal article, focus on the abstract first.

An abstract summarises the article.

Look for a journal article that is understandable and easy to read.

For longer articles, scan them and find the most relevant sections.

The literature review will let you know what topics the writer touches on in the essay.

Paraphrase and cite accurately to avoid plagiarism.

Ignore the methodology section if it is not relevant.

Find the answer in the conclusion.

Take notes on articles and reflect.

The article explains how continuous self-reflection has aided in the development of successful professionals. 442 individuals were questioned about their use of self-reflection and how it has helped. For a lot of them, self-reflection was used to learn from previous mistakes, so moving forward when faced with a similar issue, they would be able to make better decisions. The key arguments are that failure means making mistakes can lead us to identify where we went wrong and in future correct this. Making reflection a habit can help us learn better and achieve more. In conclusion, the article states that reflection gives you the willpower and self-awareness to reach your full potential. (Bailey, J.

Using sources

APA referencing is widely recognised.

It's important to use the same kind of referencing because it's clear to the reader.

Referencing is a part of academic integrity.

The author and year of publication should always be given when doing an intext citation.

Every in-text citation must be on your list of references to ensure the reader can find details of the sources.

References should begin on a new page and in alphabetical order.

There are different requirements to write out a reference depending on which source you are using.

Academic dishonesty is defined as cheating. It includes actions such as using unauthorised tools, assisting others with cheating, giving false information, and committing plagiarism. (Akbulut et al., 2008; Sendag et al., 2012) These are all things that create an unfair advantage over other peers, and these actions are inconsistent with the established expectations of university conduct.

The text explains that students tend to cheat for many different reasons, hence the methods for reducing academic dishonesty are also varied. It talks about factors related to students, institutions, delivery methods, and assessments, such as multiple-choice questions or essays. The text also highlights that prevention methods should take into account why students engage in dishonest behaviour in the first place to be able to prevent it.

According to (Fishman, 2014), academic integrity entails commitment to the fundamental values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage.

References

Fishman, T.

CRAAP Test

The article was written on the 5th of May 2011. This is relevant to my topic because it describes how and why continuous self-reflection positively affects one’s academic studies. This was written by Henk G Schmit and Madeleine D N Lew. It is backed up by an unbiased analysis of 690 first-year students. Data was collected twice at the beginning of the year and at the end. It was written to evaluate whether journaling was an effective method of self-evaluation and whether students become better at self-evaluation if they engage in continuous journal reflective practices.

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10459-011-9298-z

The article was written on the 4th of March 2022. This is relevant to my topic because it talks about how others have used self-reflection to learn from their mistakes. James R. Bailey and Scheherazade Rehman wrote this. This is relevant to the topic I am focusing on, which is self-reflection and why it is important. This article is backed up by data where 442 individual professionals were asked about their experiences with self-reflection. They gave genuine answers to embarrassing stories, careless decisions, as well as smart decisions and achievements. This was written to show how self-reflection can help an individual elevate in their practice, in my case, my studies.

https://hbr.org/2022/03/dont-underestimate-the-power-of-self-reflection

This article was written in March 2019. This is relevant to my topic because it explores how students view and use self-reflection in their academic studies and how impactful self-evaluation is on students. Violetta Rodek wrote this. This article is backed up by data collected from 146 university students who reflected on how they learn and how effective their techniques are. Studies found that memorising was the most popular method used among students. This was written to evaluate how students learn through self-reflection and if they find it more meaningful.

Learning and its Effectiveness in Students' Self-reflection

This piece of work helped me understand the meaning of CRAAP and how to apply it to sources when evaluating them.
