As an Academic Coordinator on my campus, my goal will be to embed in time for our teams to discuss and share the craft of their teaching. Currently, our PLC process operates on a 3-week cycle (see PDF) and week 3 focuses on modeling and sharing activities that will increase engagement and meet student needs based on data. However, sometimes too much time is spent in week 1 and 2 work that week 3 is doesn't get the attention or time that it needs. I will work closely with the facilitators of each team to provide some of the engagement strategies from Wild Card to pair during our week 3 work. Allowing teachers time to model and share their creativity will help our campus with student engagement and the needed rigor. I am excited to create a menu board of engagement strategies from the toolbox mentioned in the last chapter to help facilitate lesson planning in week 3 of our PLC process.

I had so many students ask what the movies name were over and over and where were they streaming. They did not complain once about analyzing the speeches and readily found information to volunteer out in class. This week made the foundation of our argument research essays fun and enabled students to look forward to arguing a topic instead of looking at it like dry toast. I had more students conference one on one on their own accord to discuss their topics. I am happy that my team supported my going out on a limb and loved they all had similar feedback!

I use this activity on the first day of AP Statistics as a way to introduce students to the biggest idea in the course, which is inference. The activity involves watching a video, carrying out a simulation, making a dotplot and then discussing what kind of evidence the simulation provided. I love this activity because it involves a real life application, introduces key vocabulary, gets students out of their seats and engaged, and brings about great discussion of very deep statistical concepts on just the very first day of class!!
