Even though the Walls family was very disorganized for very odd reasons Rex always thought family should be put first. No excuses when it came to their children needing to put their family first but many excuses like looking for gold or needing money for art supplies always came before the children's nutritional needs.

Jeanette's mother was very narcissistic, Rose Mary always needed to have attention on herself. "It's not my fault you're hungry. Don't blame me! You think i like living like this? Do you?" said Rose Mary. If she had food she would eat it all herself and not share any of it. Rex would ask to borrow money from Jeanette and would only pay it back if the deal came with a catch to it.

Even after everything her parents have put her and her siblings through, she still had love for her father and even took in her mother. She never resented them or hated them for the way they lived. As a kid all she thought was that it was all an exciting adventure. All just a fairytale dream everyone wished they had.

Rex made many promises about building their dream house they've always desired. Slowly, the kids started to realize that there's no such thing as the glass castle and it will never happen. "Dad brought us grocery bags worth of food, 'Have I ever let you guys down?, he asked and walked out of the cafeteria. Brian and I whispered to each other 'yes' and giggled as we unravelled our food." Rex also promised Jeannette he wouldn't drink anymore then had a bad day and went drinking that night and didn't come home.

At 3 years old Jeanette was boiling hot dogs and taking care of herself because of her mentally ill mother thought painting was a more efficient way to spend her time. " 'Good for you' said mom when she saw me cooking. 'You've got to get right back in the saddle. You can't live in fear of something as basic as fire,' said Rose Mary." She also tried to make the glass castle happen on her own when everyone else lost faith.
