I believe that if she was not raped that the entire story would change drastically. My reasoning for that is if she was not "mute", then they would not have been sent back to Stamps like they were in the story. Instead they would live out a lot more of their lives in California than in Stamps and she would also have never met Louise and Mrs.Flowers.

Classmates will see your answer

I believe that the most important factor in a characters evolution throughout the story is the events that take place in which the character is or even isn't involved in. I think this to be true because in an event that affect the character, it will directly affect how they feel. But something indirect can also affect a character. For example, for Maya a indirect event could be the killing of a white by a black. This does not directly involve her because she wasn't there or she didn't do it, but it will affect her because of the color of her skin. The experiences impact someones empathy because they may not want to or be able to feel for others because of something that has happened in the past. Their wisdom may also be affected because the way they see things may be altered because of event that they go through. An example of someone's empathy being changed is on page 148 and 149 when Maya says "Joyce, don't you do that to my brother." This is an example because when Maya saw what was being done to her brother, she remembered what happened to herself and tried to defend her brother. If Maya had not been through this experience herself, she may not have known about what was happening or reacted at all.

The entire book would be completely different if Maya was not raped. First of all, Maya probably would have never had to move from St. Louis. The main reason that Maya left was because Vivian's family felt offended that Maya stopped taking. Therefore, Maya probably would have not gone mute and had to leave. Their family would probably have a fairy normal life because they were a pretty typical family, other than the fact that they had to deal with racism.

I believe if Maya was not raped then she would be still living with her mother in St Louis. Also, Maya would be more talkative and would not have any of those flashbacks that she had during her experiences.

The single most important factor in character evolution is the reason that someone evolves. If someone has something bad that makes them evolve, they may evolve into something bad or worse than they previously were. This is the same for good events, too. This helps shape the character into who they are and who they are destined to be.

The most important factor in character evolution is how a character deals with adversity. For instance, Maya has to deal with adversity when she becomes pregnant. Maya has a hard time on deciding if she should tell her parents so, she decides that she will ask Bailey. Bailey replies back to Maya by giving her suggestions. "...he cautioned me against telling Mother of my condition. We both knew her to be violently opposed to abortion"(Angelou 285). Maya decides that the best thing to do is to not tell her parents until the second week before giving birth. In final consideration, Maya learns how to deal with adversity by standing up for her brother and herself.

If Maya was never raped her entire life would have been totally different. She wouldn't have to suffer thinking back about the tragic event and she probably wouldn't have gone mute because she wouldn't feel responsible for killing someone. Overall Maya's life and personality would have been much different if she had not been raped.

The single most important factor to character evolution is the experiences the character faces that make them evolve. A character could evolve in a negative way if they are going through negative experiences like in the story when Maya was raped she became much more isolated. Same thing for positive experiences, when Maya got a job she evolved in a positive way.
