I broke a folkway norm, usually most people will ride an elevator facing the door of the elevator, and standing up. However I chose to break the social norm at Valencia College, by riding the elevator sitting down and facing the wall of the elevator. Normally, you would face the wall if you are a child in school who got into some mischief. Also, usually only children sit on the floor with there legs crossed, but in school not in an elevator.The majority of people that witnessed my deviance looked at me really weird, and they tried to stay as far away from me as possible. I had a few adults, and two students ask me if I was okay. I simply replied that I was, they just looked very concerned for me. However one person, just straight out asked me what I was doing and asked other questions. I only gave short answers such as, "sitting" or "I'm okay", he also left the elevator looking concerned and weirded out. It was honestly very hard to do this. When I first got on, facing the wall was easy, but when I sat I felt very weird and out of place. I felt like the minutes dragged on . I also got very self conscious, I felt like everyone decided to ride the elevator in that moment.I felt like the elevator was getting smaller by the minute. I also felt that everyone was making fun of me. I have faced a lot of bisexual erasure from both heterosexual and homosexual people, lesbians have told me that I'm just a lipstick lesbian (a girl who is only trying to experience being gay but is not "actually" gay). I have been told that I'm just asking for attention by straight people. Also, I used to  jam bottle of water behind the back tire of my bicycle just to make it sound as a motorcycle. When my mother caught me, she sent me to one of the corner of her room. Since we were young children we were socialized to brush our teeth right after we wake up and take showers before we start our day. As I grew up, those norms stayed with me and I continued them even during college. I remember finding out that some people do not really take showers everyday, or twice a day like me (after waking up and then before going to bed) and it was mostly shocking but I still held those norms important. 
This extra credit came in perfect timing, because this weekend I went back home to visit my mom and I chose to wake on Saturday and instead of brushing my teeth and take a shower I went straight to my laptop. My mother noticed my deviance and immediately proceeded to judge my actions and tell me to  "at least" go and brush my teeth. This norm would change if I was back in Orlando, where I live without my parents. If I chose to not take a shower and go on with my day I would never get any type of sanction. However, since I was at home, and my mom was not too happy about me breaking this norm I decided to go brush my teeth right away. I was with two of my friends eating brunch when I decided my act of deviance would be to eat my food on the floor of a restaurant. One of my friends hid in the bathroom while I did it because she was too embarrassed to even be seen with someone breaking such an intense folkway. Before even sitting down on the floor, i had to coach myself for a solid 5 minutes, gaining the courage to do it. Everyone stared at me (as seen in the photo) and it was awful. The sanctions I received where these awkward stares and everyone around me thinking that I was some bizarre person from another planet. It occurred to me that if everyone was eating on the floor, no one would even notice., it would be the normal, and someone sitting at a table would be deviant. Crazy just how much we have to fit in with everyone else. The amount of anxiety I got from doing this was insane, and that is so silly because all I did was sit on the floor. I picked this because we are in the middle of summer in Florida and we all know it is so hot here. There were a few families there at the pool that stared at me a little but not a lot. I think they were more focused on playing in the pool to even question why I was there. I laid down on a chair over from a lady who did not seem to mind me there at all. I wasn't nervous about doing this at all nor did I feel so out of place. In an act of social folkway deviance I brought a lawn chair from the other side of the store to the grocery side, set it up, proceeded to strip down to my bathing suit (which I was wearing because we were on our way to the beach and had to stop to pick up a few things), and just laid down on the lawn chair right there at the end of one of the isles. As it is a generally weird thing to see in the grocery store, a woman laying out on a lawn chair in her bathing suit, which is generally a beach or poolside activity, I received many weird looks. Unfortunately I only lasted about five minutes before my brain was able to push through the  energy drink induced adrenaline and my GAD started to set in, though I did accomplish my goal of embarrassing my mother.

People might ask me to go home, people might insult me, police officers might drag me out, or even harassment. Of course if I go home, I can breastfeed my baby freely without the society restrictions. 
As a matter of feeling, I will feel ashamed since I broke the norm. This weekend I was invited to a pool party. Usually it is the norm to wear a swimsuit in the water since it is specific material for water. However, I decided to get in fully clothed! Jeans(the worst), a black tshirt, and a baseball cap. Everyone kept questioning me as to why I was getting with all my clothes and would not stop mentioning it. Repeatedly, "Zuleika, go change". I did feel like a fish out of water since I was the only one dressed like that but eventually I got over it!

I felt an emotional relief to defy the norm of 'not' sleeping in public because of my StrengthQuest profile where one of my strengths is "Connectedness."  I believe we are one with the Universe.  I love nature and being outside. Underneath I had shorts and a shirt on but it was hard to tell and it just looked like I was wearing a robe. I walked around Target shopping while wearing this robe. This is an act of defiance as it is not the norm for people to wear robes outside of their homes or driveways to grab the newspaper. Bathrobes are also typically not worn mid day but rather early in the morning or late at night after a shower. In society we are taught to dress and act a certain way and shopping in a bathrobe is definitely not a proper way to act. I didn't receive any sanctions as far as getting in trouble for it, surprisingly the guards didn't say anything. However, I did get a lot of stares as I was walking into the store from the car in the parking lot, as well as in the store. Emotionally I felt embarrassed as I was getting a lot of stares, but it also felt sort of exhilarating to break free of social norm, even if it was only for an hour while shopping.

Not only did I wear socks with sandals, but the socks didn't match. This would be an example of a folkway because it is against social protocol to wear clothes that don't match. I didn't really feel any social pressure because people weren't really paying attention. I enjoy wearing high socks so I guess that doesn't really phase me.
Fashion is one of those weird social norms because it is constantly changing and evolving. Things come in and out of style all the time. My act of deviance is becoming more and more accepted with the way fashion is becoming more extravagant and experimental. This is an act of defiance because it's hard to take anyone serious while they have chopsticks hanging out of their mouth. I kept it like that for about 15 minutes or so (it was hard to eat with them). After awhile, my dad joined in and we both looked ridiculous at dinner. I personally am not embarrassed easily so it was not a big deal to me but other table-mates that were not with our party stared really hard and giggled. They were definitely taken back by how long we had the chopsticks in our mouths. To my surprise, most of my neighbors just greeted me and kept walking. I received a few long glances but no one actually said anything to me. Coincidently, my boyfriend happened to coming home as I was on my way home and he asked, “What the hell are you doing?” That was the only backlash that I received.

It is normal for us teenagers to pose like that or for boys to dress like that. Sagging pants is very unattractive and unwanted in most professional environments. My other friend is bent over with her tongue sticking out. I recorded as many reactions I could but due to my camera man being embarrassed and my phone being low on memory, I could not capture them all. I mostly got stares. I had a parent tell their daughter in Spanish not to stare at me. A girl in her group of friends said "Oh my God". This one man was so amazed that he kept walking around me as if he couldn’t believe what I was wearing. Although at first I was kind of nervous for this experiment, I feel it was a lesson well taught first hand.
