Teachers gave suggested topics at the beginning of the process, but at this point students are asking each other questions and responding and getting to know each other on their own.

Welcome every student at the door with a smile, explain to the class what's the objective for the day, so they can have a daily goal, and allow for cooperation to create stronger students' relationships.

We have also previously incorporated a Pen Pal program with our AVID Juniors and AVID 8th graders...we have made it a point to also plan and attend a field trip together....this was a great community building activity...with COVID I am hoping to start this program again.

We participate in a morning meeting where we discuss a variety of topics. Students are able to do a check in with a "feelings meter" (FAST class). They are also encouraged through prompting and sentence frames to share aloud with peers to build a classroom community.

We begin the day with the students answering a question prompted by the teacher. They have time to think about their answer, then share with a partner, then share in a whole group format if they want. This often leads to other students wanting to share about something they heard another student say. I watched the Youtube video, The Power of Relationships by Dr. Pamela Cantor. The video shared great strategies of how to build and maintain good relationships with students. I have been holding classroom meetings to find out more about my students' interests in order to meet their social emotional needs. I meet with them individually to talk about how things are going and discuss strategies to help them with issues they are currently having. I have also used strategies from our district program, Second Step, to help my students with their social emotional needs.

We write a weekly warmup each Friday. Sometimes it's about something serious, sometimes its lighthearted, easy writing. I always do warm ups at the start of the period to get the students actively involved. Also it gets the students to actually think and use their brains. They may involve doing quick journals, jumble word scrambles and simply asking what they ate last night, which usually sparks conversation on a personal level. It also makes me aware of any food insecurities, but in a positive way.

When ever possible I like to share something personal about myself. It could something as simple as a thing my dogs did that made me laugh or upset. Allow the students to share if they wish. They have funny stories to tell as well. Keep it very organic. Don't make it an ACTIVITY or ASSIGNMENT. Talk to students like you would any other human being. Otherwise they will notice that it's generic. If they are wearing new shoes, complement that. "Hey nice kicks." You'll see them smile (most of the time). And sometimes a great conversation happens. I allow my students to do genius hour or passion projects of their choosing. I require only a two-paragraph written or typed piece to ground the work. For students, these projects become very personal and a way to share more about who they are with their classmates, while boosting their public speaking skills. I’ve had students present about their rare medical conditions that they were previously afraid to talk about. Other students have explored their family heritage or activities they participate in, like karate or dance. I've found the simple things can go a long way with building relationships. I'm quite open about my own personal life and answer student questions about my life relatively freely. Every Monday I start the first few minutes of class having students share out what they did over the weekend, and if time permits on Fridays, I'll have students share out their weekend plans in the last few minutes of class. I believe the students get a genuine sense that I care about them and am interested in their lives beyond just being students at school, and it allows for interesting tangential discussions about various topics that serve to further build relationships.

Every day, or at least every other day, I check-in with my students and ask them how they are doing. They are welcome to share about school, about their personal, anything that their heart desires. This then has this domino effect of more and more students engaging in conversation about their similar experiences or interests. I really love just taking time to just talk to my students, academics aside.

I have tried to acknowledge the students who seem to have given up on passing the course, and have a hostile attitude. I have had quick 3 minute conferences with them while the other students are working. So far their attitudes have improved, if not the grade, because the body language is different, and they response to me where as before they would ignore, barely respond, or be defensive when I speak to them.

Students are greeted at the door at the start of every class and class begins with a prompted question where students have think time and can share out their answers.

I strive to greet each student at the door and say "good morning" or "good afternoon" with a smile beneath the mask. I try to give students some time before the class bell rings to give them opportunity to share with me about their weekend, what's been happening, their progress in class, and etc.

I greet my students every single day with a "good morning" and give them Starbucks for arriving on time. Also, I use Spencer Kagan Class Building activities to build classroom community. The whole district should be trained in Spencer Kagan since there is a wealth of activities to promote building relationships and practicing soft skills, along with academics built into it.

Every day we either fist bump, high 5, or elbow tap. The students really love it, and when I put my arm down, they remind me "hey where are my knuckles." They really enjoy that interaction before entering the room. I also like to say "good morning/afternoon" to them. This just gives them a stronger sense of belonging.

I use the check in board that I learned from a colleague and I've seen others discuss here. It is just a way for students to know that they are heard and that they have a safe space to express true feelings without being judged. On this board students place sticky notes of feelings- good, bad, or indifferent- about what is going on in their lives.

Daily Mood Check-Ins: We discuss how we are feeling in the moment and talk about ways to deal with adversity. We also watch short videos on how others might model perseverance and determination.

Every morning, there is a google slide with a question for students. It can be simple. For example, "what is your favorite candy?" or "How are you feeling today?" Students write in their journal and then have 1 -2 minutes to check in with a partner. They have come to really enjoy these daily check-ins as a time to connect and talk briefly with the class, me , or another student.

I do a weekly "lift-Up" (rather than "put down") where once a week I trace the outline of a student on butcher paper. Students them write positive things about that student around their figure. Students always find something nice to say, even if they aren't close to that student.

In our classroom we build and support interpersonal relationships. I try and share things that I do away from school and have the students do the same. I feel like I can connect with them through shared experiences or from learning from something they are involved in. We also complete an All-About-Me Google slide project at the beginning of the year which allows myself as well as the other students to learn things about each other that they would not ordinarily know.
We also work frequently in groups which are switched up regularly to allow students to interact with more than just their everyday friends. Greeting students at the door, journal writing and just building trust are other forms of building a sense of belonging.

I greet every class everyday at the door with an "Aloha" and a "Shaka - Mahalo".
The kids all respond back with an "Aloha" and giving me a "Shaka".

It is great to be walking out on campus throughout the day and have students call out "aloha" to me and other students (even those who I do not have as students.)

3rd grade We do 5 min. meditation at the beginning of the day (using meditation videos). Then we talk about different ways to improve and have a better day than the day before.

We have morning meeting. We have our own page that is used for building our class as a unit, or a family. Everyone is important. The kids love it as do the parents. Our class checks-in with the use of a feelings scale, that has a bead attached to a pipe cleaner. Students can slide their bead up and down the scale, depending on how they are feeling that day. I would select a few to share with the class. The others, I would walk around the classroom and acknowledge their feelings to some extent.

We do a daily morning meeting. Each day will include students completing an activity together as a class. Students also answer a daily question and share their responses with the whole class. Here is an example of our Monday activity.

On Friday's the class spends a few minutes sharing plans for the weekend. On Mondays they share what they didi over the weekend. This brief activity sets a positive mood for the period and we all get to know about each other's family and lives outside of the classroom. We go over the rules and regulations of the activities with the students. We check in with the students to get feedback if they understand the concepts, rules, and regulations. We monitor the students through out the activity to see the progress and help students if they forget.

I greet students at the door using one of 3 methods (handshake, fist bump, or high five). We have a daily morning meeting question, some on important topics and others about silly debates. I also have a Google Form where they can report bullying or any incidents they want to notify me of, this gives them a safe space to let me know what is going on.

Friday Letter. Kids decorated composition books with their home life pictures. Every Friday they write to home. Parents/siblings/grandparents write back in their journal. They get to tell whomever how school was, if anything was hard, something new they learned, etc.

I started the year giving students three options to greet at the door, thumbs up, air high five or peace sign. They have now added their own and it is so fun. Today I had a dab, a dragon, a dinosaur, and a heart for greetings from the kids. This time also gives me a minute to look at the kids and see if someone is sad. When the students in my SPED class are feeling anxious or out of control, we use gonoodle.com. They enjoy the video called "Melting," where students practice melting away that feeling you get when you feel scared, frustrated or angry. We also practice breathing exercises called "Whale Breath" to relax and destress, if a student is feeling angry. We use "Rainbow Breath," to help the students raise their energy level and feel empowered.

My students are in cooperative groups that compete with other groups in class games and are encouraged to help each other. The groups switch periodically.

We get to know each other by interviewing a student a day. The student of the day is asked questions by their classmates. We chart the responses and then each student writes what they have learned about the student. Then they draw and illustrate a picture. All of the writing is compiled into a book that we keep in class for all the students to read. This is a great way to get to know each other.

We meet every morning and watch a short SEL video and then have a discussion about it. Students often have time to talk with each other about how they feel during this time.

We end the day with our class meeting. It's a wonderful way to end the day together and check in with each of the students.

We have "table talk" first thing in the morning, where students can choose to meet at my horseshoe table to chat about whatever they want for 10-15 minutes a couple of times a week. Students do not have to participate, and are given the option to stay at their desks and read or draw during this time as well. Students take turns by passing "the talking rock" to the person who is talking, this keeps the group from getting loud, and gives each student the time to share whatever they want to share. I also post norms for his area- Be respectful of others, appropriate topics only, one speaker at a time.

Greet the students as they walk into the school and when I see them in the hallways or any other areas. Speak to the students about their hobbies and interests, they love to share these thought to me. Social emotional check ins during the day have helped me connect with my students. As simple as just asking them how their day is going or asking them how they feel and encouraging them.

One way to build on relationships is to dedicate the days learning to someone. Each student has a day where they get to say who they want the class to dedicate the learning to. For example, one student might say "I want to dedicate our learning to my grandfather because he was really special to me." The student can bring in a picture or a drawing of the person.

I stand by the door and greet each student as they walk through the door.
It is an opportunity for me to welcome them into the classroom.When my students are comfortable enough, we develop a handshake that is unique for each student. I also have reading conferences and discuss what they are reading. During this time, I learn more about each student and how their day is going.

We use a meditation app twice a day to take a "mindful minute" after recess and lunch breaks. Student sit quietly and just chill out for those 2 minutes, the timer is projected onto the tv for them to see. Really helps student re-center and regulate themselves after play.

In the morning, each student identifies themselves by touching, or looking at a picture of their name and photo. Then we sing "good morning" to them by name. The student's look forward to this and most grin or laugh when it is their turn and they hear their names.

After the teacher greets each student at the door, students come in and greet their seat partner with an air high five and tell each other something that is on their minds, mostly teacher directed. We have a short video about SEL and discuss it with the whole class or partners. There is a Would You Rather? question of the day. If we have time, students will defend their answers. There is also a quote of the day, that we explore and discuss together.

I create Schoology Discussions from ClassDojo and SecondStep lessons. The students respond to the videos using their own words or with sentence frames for Language support. When everyone has posted, we go over everyone's posts and discuss commonalities and differences. Students are encouraged to "like" other students posts, comment on posts they connect with, and add images inspired by their posts that other students can then download. The students really enjoy expressing their feelings, thoughts, and opinions!

I compliment my students. I talk to them on a regular basis and ask them about their family. I follow up on previous conversations to show them that I remember and care about what happens to them. When I tell them to do something, I explain to them why they have to do it. Most of the time it is for their safety (walking, using quiet voices, keeping their hands to themselves, etc). I tell them that I care about them and don't want them to get hurt.

We try to help students understand the positive effects that exercise can have on overall mood and outlook on things. After PE sessions, I like to ask students how they feel compared to how they felt beforehand. Oftentimes, students will reference worries or problems that escaped their minds for at least 30 mins and are no longer as serious as they first thought. I think this is important to help younger learners see a tangible outcome from physical activity that they will remember for life, not just in PE.

I greet each student in line daily and ask them how they're doing and if they're ready for our day! I show enthusiasm and excitement as I make my way to each student. We have consistent morning a routine and I make an effort to reach each student individually during our opening routine. Students are given ample opportunities to share their thinking during calendar and with problems to solve on the board. They also are given choice as to the plan/strategy they want to execute to solve their work problems provided. Students are provided leadership opportunities and time to discuss their thinking with each other. They feel empowered by their learning.

I do an activity Called "What's my Charge level right now?" Students have a human figure to color in to the level of their energy. Then we talk about how we can charge ourselves the way we charge our devices. We also share how we can help each other with our energy and mood.

In the morning, I greet students. I ask them how they are feeling in our morning meeting using hand signals. Those that would like to share understand they are in a safe space to do so. We also do 'Zen Den' together after lunch for calming strategies.

All the students and the teacher have a ring of colors with five colors (blue, green, yellow, orange, and red) ranging from "feeling incredible" to "having a tough time right now." As the settle in, the choose the color that fits them best. They can change their color if things get better or they are having some difficulty. This is place at the bottom of their plexiglass shields so that I can quickly glance to see who I might need to meet with individually so that they can share with me (their choice) what is going on. This can change in either direction as they day goes on. It's just big enough that I can see it from the front of the room or when I am walking through the room. But it is also small enough that others may not see them from where their desks are located. This has helped when one of my students had his dog run away to a celebration that happened over the weekend.

I make it a regular part of my schedule to meet with students individually and give them undivided attention to talk about whatever is important to them. I take an interest in their interests and ask about things that they shared previously to show them I care about who they are and what they have to offer.

During the week, I will have an individual meeting with this child. I often will begin with a compliment. The compliment may be academic, behavioral, or even something new they are wearing. Then, I begin to see inquire on a personal event/work they recently have done. This is done with trust and comfortability. Students are usually open to discuss things with me and this continues to build a stronger relationship and gives me data to see how each student is feeling during the week.

I made color copies of this mood meter for all of my third graders and put them into sheet protectors. Each morning they used a dry-erase marker to circle how they were feeling and had them think about why they were feeling that way. Students who wished to share orally were invited to share on a voluntary basis.

My 2nd grade students participate in "circle time" at their desks, similar to community circle in the morning or at the end of the day. They each have opportunities to share out their thoughts or experiences.

Almost every day I start with a short team builder. Anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. This encourages student communication and camaraderie, plus I try and visit each group during the activity to listen and perhaps provide input. This routine starts the day on a positive note and helps students vent any residual energy before diving into curriculum.

In addition, I encourage student communication with me through Schoology messaging. Mostly to clarify questions on assignments, but also informally if they have concerns, issues, or simply want to check in with me on how they are doing. This back and forth dialogue helps build trust and promotes a sense of community in the classroom.

I check in with each child daily as they come into class. I take notice of students that are looking tired or upset. I spend a few minutes chatting and helping them to express their feeling. It always ends up with them feeling better. I also let the students in a little early so they can sit/talk and connect with each other and me.

Before we even enter the classroom when out in line, I ask them how they feel and we do a call and response good but when someone does not answer I know to check in with them then we have a mantra we say to that we are going to use our amazing kindergarten brains to learn a lot and have some fun to set the mood for the day. This is followed by morning greetings at the door which at first are teacher generated with 4-5 choices then they slowly over time develop their own special greeting between the two of us. We open with movement and song them move to reading where I can check in with that student that did not participate in our morning call and response and spend time investigating how they are feeling. I teach bucket filling and we work on reading peoples emotions through our Second Steps program to build a sense of safety within our classroom community. My goal is to get to know both student and parents to make emotional connections that create a safe space where both parents and students understand that our classroom is a safe and comfortable place for learning.

I would like to try the RULER -mood meter to help children use vocabulary to express all their feelings in a safe environment where they feel respected and can express empathy for others.

At the beginning of the year I used identity maps where students filled in critical pieces of their identity: pronouns, languages, ethnicity, celebrations, family unit, and anything else they wanted to share about them. We learned everyones' pronouns to ensure student continue to be acknowledged and validated in this safe space of the speech/language room. The students still go up to their identity maps today (they are hanging up on my wall).

Each student is greeted as they walk into the classroom. The students will read a morning message that is displayed. Next, we begin our Morning Meeting in which we do a morning greeting. Each day it is a different greeting. Some examples are: air hugs, air high fives, say hello in Japanese, say, "Today is going to be a good day!" and many more. Next, we review the character trait of the month. Then on Mondays we do what is called Mindset Monday. On Tuesday it is Tell us Tuesday, Wednesday is Would you Rather, Thursday is Thoughtful Thursday, and Friday is Free Share Friday. Finally, we end with the flag salute. The students love this routine and it has really helped to build relationships and connect with one another.

As I pick up my intervention groups, we talk about what is in their mind that day. Since the groups are small, everyone gets a chance to share how they feel that day.

Positive Comment/Compliment Cards
Friday Afternoons, hand out an index card to everyone. I pull a student's name out of a jar, and the whole class takes a few minutes to write a positive comment or compliment on the index card. Then we hand the cards to the student. So when a student is having a not so great day or just needs to be reminded that they are special they can take those cards out and read them.

Sometimes as a fun warm-up we'll have a discussion board where we "Make a Meme" or "Wrong Answers Only." For "Make a Meme" I'll post a funny picture (see attached) and ask students to turn it into a school-appropriate meme. It allows students to be create and witty as well as share their talents with others. Students are asked how much experience they have in a specific sport. During a small group discussion each student is allowed to express the experience they have in that sport and to what level. This allows the teacher to be able to identify skill level to create parity in the class. Students are made aware that we have all levels of skill in the class and that not every student has experience in the different sports that we experience.

40 Questions
Each student is given a list of 40 questions that they answer about themselves ... favorite ice cream, favorite vacation, # of siblings, etc. Each day they meet up with a different person and share their answers to the same question. Elaboration is encouraged so that students get a chance to see how many connections they have with their peers, and to get students comfortable talking with one another. For example, students may learn that they have both traveled on an airplane, which leads to a conversation about where they have traveled, which leads to a conversation about where they want to travel in the future, and so on and so on. Do this every day until every student has has an interaction with every student in the class. Pretty soon there are no more strangers.

Because I work with students for the long term, it's important to build strong relationships and build that trust with the students. It facilitates mutual respect. To do this, I often spend time before a lesson asking about the student's life, what they did over the holidays (if we have just returned from a break), what they think of school, etc. Just a few minutes of building rapport has gone a long way.

In my APE class, I greet my students, then as a group I have them repeat after me, "I am strong, I am beautiful". Then, at the end of class, I have them repeat, "I am smart".

At the start of class we have our 4 color feelings chart (Red/Upset, Gold/Fantastic, Green/Good and Blue/Sad) where students express how they are feeling before we start our physical warm-up.

On Mondays, I start out the week with students and myself sharing how our weekend was. We can share good things or bad things which helps us find common experiences and build empathy.

We like to start each day with a morning meeting to discuss how we feel and welcome everyone to the classroom with a daily check in and greeting.

Voluntarily open classroom doors before school start and snacks time so students could hang out and discuss about their everyday life activities.

We do a model writing activity in our class where a child is chosen weekly to tell us a few things about themselves and I model write it for them. This writing is turned into a poster which is titled with the child's name. That child chooses another child to decorate their poster with them. The rest of the children go to their seats and writes/draws their own page for this selected child's class book. Eventually every child in our class has their poster hung in class and take home their class book to share with their family.

I have students fill out a short form about 5 things that made them smile, 4 things that they were proud of 3 people they connected with, 2 goals they are still working on, 1 gratitude. It's a quick self awareness check in students enjoy doing.

One piece of anecdotal data I'm able to get regarding sense of belonging (to see if our current strategies in place are working or if they need to be addressed) is inclusion within partner groups in class. I usually use randomizers or pre-formed heterogenous groupings. But sometimes I have kids partner up. I learn a lot from those who are left wandering without a partner. Same goes with choosing partners in advance. Today I asked for students to fill out a Google Form with the names of 4 friends they'd like to work with as writing partners for this unit. Besides helping me form writing partners, I see which kids are not being chosen. These are the kids I need to focus on and really support with feeling included and building friendships.

My students participate in engaging morning meetings at least 3 to 4 times a week. They love sharing and listening to their friends. We often laugh together.

We do a community circle at the beginning of the day. We have a question that can range to a variety of topics. Each child gets the opportunity to answer the question using the talking stick.

I've started holding space for Social Emotional Learning. I've taken ideas from Cotsen Inner Outer series with Arlene Casimir. We've created a schedule where selected students will share what's in their hearts and thoughts with the class and the others will respond with recognizing what that person is going through.

When there is a conflict among students in my class, I try to make sure that all voices are heard in the conflict. I have a sentence frame prepared to start the conversation about the wrong that was done and by whom, as well as asking why they did it, and then allowing them a chance to speak. This has helped with conflict mediation, as well as given some students the tools to speak up.

I try to meet weekly with each student for 5 min or so to just talk..... they always want to tell me something during our group learning times, so I tell them to hold onto those ideas until we meet together individually. Then, when I call them over, our minutes go by quickly! I hear about their families, friends, happy times, sad times, worries, etc....

When my kindergarten students come in from recess they are too excited and over-stimulated to do classwork. I transition them by preparing the classroom with soft, relaxing music and having them come into the classroom quietly and put their heads down for about 5 minutes. This time is well-invested because they are now ready to learn and participate in a respectful and calm way.

I use a greeting chart at the door where students choose how they want to be greeted. I also use a compliment circle where students take turns giving warm fuzzies (compliments) to a fellow classmate. We are always Bucket Filling (being kind and inclusive) based upon the book we read in class. "Are you a bucket filler is my transition to and from the carpet.

To help guide my students to remain focused and calm, I do morning exercises and stretches with them. Through out the day, we do periods of movement based activities.

Every other day we journal for the first 10 minutes of the class period. Most of the journal questions are "low-risk" questions that students can answer comfortably without revealing anything too personal. Afterward, students can share their entries with the class if they wish. It's interesting to see their responses and gives insight into how the students think and feel.
