This resource confirmed my understanding that the cold war broke out because of due to Stalin and Truman's differing perspective of why the Sovietisation of Eastern Europe might have been unjustifiable which led to the distrust between the allies and finally to the start of the cold war. The resource highlighted how Stalin wanted to protect Soviet military interests and mitigate potential consequences of invasion from the West through installing buffer zones across Eastern Europe and how Stalin managed to use strategic tactics such as rigging elections, decapitating leaders, and manipulation to secure their control over the European states. make most of the countries in Eastern Europe except Yugoslavia who was able to balance relationships with both East and West, establishing economic and diplomatic ties with non-aligned countries, making it harder for the USSR to exploit internal divisions and establish control, geological separation and following “T Vitoism,” which was a very unique form of socialism that diverged from the Soviet model. This led to the eventual expulsion of Yugoslavia from the comminform in 1948, due to accusations from Stalin that Yugoslavia was deviating from traditional Marxism-Leninism and attempting to create a separate socialist bloc. This solidified Yugoslavia’s independence from Soviet control. This thing about Yugoslavia is something new to me and I found it quite interesting. Truman's views differs a lot from that of Stalin. He thought that Sovietisation of Eastern Europe was unjustifiable as Stalin made use of unethical tactics, such as rigging elections, decapitating leaders, and manipulation to secure their control over the European states. Stalin did not honour his agreement to ensure Soviet actions were aligned with the values of the Declaration on Liberated Europe, which he had signed. Also, Stalin had signed the Declaration on Liberated Europe, by which the Big Three promised to help all liberated peoples “to solve by democratic means their pressing political and economic problems” through “free elections of Governments responsive to the will of the people.”
