3. How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

Through historical background research, students work as a group dig deep to find out the fundamentals and origins of scientific inquiries. For example, students who are keen on medicine in Taiwan may find out that James Laidlaw Maxwell and his sons oversaw the construction of Sin-lâu Hospital in Tainan, the first western-style hospital in Taiwan.
Group 4 subjects also help the students to have a clear mind about the science profession life. At our institution, we help to place students in professional shadowing. Students learn from the doctors, lawyers and scientists in a way to observe and participate in the daily tasks.

In my class, we have students around world from different culture backgrounds with the same passion: to find out the truth behind the surface. I try to excite students to the wonders of science and foster their abilities to think for themselves, ask important questions, and critically analyze data. I engage students in inquiry-based thinking and recognize that science is not simply a list of facts to be memorized but a process of learning how to think, wonder, and ask questions of the world.

5.	How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

My role is not to transmit knowledge but to create learning opportunities for students to work collaboratively. I believe that learning can be enhanced and strengthened when students are motivated to learn by authentic assignments that have a real world purpose. When students leave my classroom or lab, I hope that they are fascinated by biology, empowered to think scientifically, and inspired to approach life with a mixture of awe, curiosity, and critical thought. A successful class is one in which we all learn from each other and take pride in and ownership of our learning.

6.	What activities have you carried out in your class that have knowingly or unknowingly highlighted or celebrated international-mindedness?

I strive to energize and extend the book content and articulate connections between in-class science and science in our everyday lives.
Trough paper reading and the poster group project, students engage in the ownership of the learning. Recently we had a debate in our ethics topics regarding to the embryonic stem cell development and organ transportation. By researching the background information and policies around the world, students identified how culture and value can shape the understandings of the scientifc inquiries.
