When Athens first made a government because they made many it was a Oligarchy government. How it happen? Let me tell you. So later on when Athens was formed a group of people also known as the "Aristocrats" took over. Why they took over your wondering, Well they took over because they were rich. They dominated the society, ran the city's economy. All sorts of stuff. Soon enough people got tired of them so in 600 B.C. a group tried to rebel them. Did they win? No. but soon after a man did "defeat" them by making new laws. He was known as Draco.

So the man, who over threw the Aristocrats. his name was.. Draco. Now you may think he was a good leader and all that jazz. No sir. His laws were very harsh. for example.. One small crime could lead to death. Yikes! So the people of Athens thought his laws were WAY TOO strict. Like who can't agree with them? So.. in 590s B.C. A man named "Solon"created much less harsh laws and basically over threw Draco.

"Solon"- The one who defeated a tiger! Just kidding he made Athens better !!!

Soon after Solon took over in 590 B.C. he made less harsh laws. Unlike Draco over here. His laws made Athens better but did not at the same time. He made it 50, 50. His laws gave more rights to the people who were not rich also known as the "Unaristocrats" but gave less rights to the "Aristocrats". Now Solon that is not fair! But the good news is men under his laws living in Athens became a Citizen!!! Yay! Yet, his work was not enough for Athens.

Since the Athenians were not pleased. (Stubborn people) they wanted a new government. So in 546 B.C. a very noble man, overthrew Oligarchy. This man is known as "Peisitratus". This man started to rule but.. he was a "Tyrant" which means "Leader who held the power through force". Normally Athenian Tyrants were good leaders. They were able to stay in power because they had strong armies. Plus people supported them as well. They brought peace and prosperity to the city. They started to unify by getting new policies along with that they mad festivals and temples and etc. Soon after poor Pisistratus died.. So his son took over. The Aristocrats got made and fought the Tyrants and they lost so the Aristocrats were back in power.
