The book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, is about a farm of animals who are tired of being abused and worked by the farm owner. The animals decide to start a rebellion and are successfully able to drive their owner out of their farm and take it for themselves. Soon after the animals start tending to the farm themselves, the pigs slowly begin taking control of the entire farm and force the other animals to have harsher work conditions and small rations, while the pigs live in luxury. In a few years time, all the animals are in no better situation than when their original farmer was abusing and working them, except for the pigs who have become no different from the humans that they all hate.

This picture shows a horse being brought to a glue factory to be killed. It represents how some people blindly follow figures of authority without being knowledgeable in what they have done. Farmers make horses do a ton of work on a farm, but once the horse becomes weak or old, it is sent away to be killed and turned into glue. This relates to "Animal Farm" because Boxer always stayed loyal to Napoleon and always believed Napoleon was right, but he was sent off to be killed once he was no longer useful despite all of the hard work he had done. Boxer believed that Napoleon was sending him to a veterinarian, but was to naive to realize it was actually a glue factory truck.

This a picture of apples and milk. In "Animal Farm", Napoleon takes all of the apples and milk for him and the pigs because he claims that the "need" them in order for them to run the farm smoothly. The animals all believe him and do not question him or try to get any of it for themselves. It relates to the theme because all of the animals put to must trust in Napoleon, who is the authority, and end up being scammed out of things that they enjoy eating and drinking.

Both "The Giver" and "Animal Farm" have their main conflicts centered around a government that lies to manipulate its citizens. In "Animal Farm", Napoleon lies to put himself in a position of power over all of the other animals. In "The Giver", the Council of Elders lies about release and about many of the other aspects of their community to restrict the citizens. Each has citizens who all blindly follow the authorities, which is why they can be manipulated and controlled very easily. This is why the theme statement "Never completely trust the authorities" can be applied to both "Animal Farm" and "The Giver".

The picture shows a child being "released" from the movie adaptation of "The Giver". When someone is released it means that they are killed and then put down a vent to a garbage area. It is a very inhumane procedure because it is done on small infants that are not big enough to meet standards and is also used as a punishment in some cases. It relates to the theme because the citizens of The Community are told that release is a good things and that you get to leave the community and explore the world, but in reality the government lies to them and hides that it means they will be killed.

It relates to "Animal Farm", because Napoleon did the same thing that the video discussed by lying about the things he does and about what he needs to put himself in the position of leader. It shows that people should not fully trust government because it discusses real life examples of when the government lies to its citizens.

The government in "The Giver" takes away things like emotion and color from people and keeps it a secret.

This video talks about how government should not keep secrets from the citizens and provides examples in the Malaysian government. Much like the government in "The Giver", the Malaysian government and politicians keep a large portion of the governments information secret. If a government keeps loads of information secret, it will lead anyone who finds some of those secrets to question and doubt the government, just like Jonas.
It relates to the theme because it ties in with the fact that governments can be untrustworthy and can keep secrets from citizens.

The book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, is about a boy named Jonas, who is about to turn 12. He lives in a place only known as "The Community" that is built on sameness and blandness to keep the people controlled and "safe". The government in The Community assigns jobs, spouses, children, and even took away the ability to see color and feel emotions from everyone in order to have them live a "perfect" and safe life. Once Jonas turns 12, he gets assigned the important job of being the Receiver of Memories, who is in charge of holding all of the memories before the sameness of The Community became a thing. As he begins his job, his mentor and the previous Receiver of Memories known as "The Giver" shows him many wonderful things and colors that the government does not allow citizens to see. As Jonas begins to learn more and more, he starts to see that his home is not at all perfect and that they have many flaws and horrible policies that are inhumane towards citizens. After learning all of this, he decides to escape The Community with a baby that would have been killed with the help of The Giver.

This quote shows the Giver talking to Jonas about the lies the government tells to everyone to make the citizens oblivious and easily controlled. It ties in with the theme because no one in The Community besides Jonas and the Giver have ever thought of the government as being anything less than perfect. In doing this they have let themselves be manipulated and transformed however the government wants them to because they know nothing. If the people were to question the government or try to learn about things, then The Community could have turned out differently.
