The knowledge you gained from that usrah session is very important in understanding the fundamentals of religion. Islam, Iman, and Ihsan are the three basic principles that form the core of religious life.

Islam: Refers to outward practices such as the five pillars of Islam – shahada (faith), salah (prayer), sawm (fasting), zakah (charity), and hajj (pilgrimage). These are the practical aspects that every Muslim must practice.

Iman: Refers to the aspect of belief or creed, including the six pillars of faith – belief in Allah, angels, books, prophets, the Day of Judgment, and divine decree (qada' and qadar).

Ihsan: Refers to the inner dimension, meaning how we worship Allah with sincerity. Ihsan means to worship Allah as though we see Him, and even if we do not see Him, to be fully aware that He sees us.

Mastering and learning each of these aspects thoroughly is key to gaining a deeper understanding of religion, so that you can practice it with sincerity and seek the pleasure of Allah.

The first session begins with a ta‘āruf (getting to know each other) session and ice-breaking activities to foster a strong bond among participants. A welcoming and comfortable environment is crucial for meaningful discussions.

This week also emphasizes the importance of seeking ḥikmah (wisdom) in every act of worship rather than performing rituals without understanding their significance. Participants will:

• Understand the importance of setting the right niyyah (intention) before any action.

• Learn how ʿamal (practices) shape their character and daily life.

• Internalize iḥsān, the concept of excellence in worship and conduct—practicing faith as if seeing Allah, or at least being aware that Allah sees them.

The Wisdom Behind Acts of Worship

Each act of worship in Islam carries deep wisdom and purpose. This week, participants will explore the wisdom behind four major forms of ʿibādah, supported by verses from the Qur’an:

1. Ṣalāh (Prayer) – Surah Al-ʿAnkabūt (29:45) states that prayer prevents indecency and wrongdoing. When performed with sincerity and focus, it shapes a person’s discipline and moral character.

2. Ṣawm (Fasting) – Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183) highlights that fasting instills taqwā (God-consciousness). It helps individuals develop self-restraint, patience, and empathy for those less fortunate.

3. Zakāh (Charity) – Surah Al-Tawbah (9:103) describes zakāh as a means of purifying both wealth and the soul. It not only helps the needy but also cultivates generosity and prevents greed.

4. Ḥajj (Pilgrimage) – Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197) emphasizes discipline and good conduct during ḥajj. It teaches patience, humility, and the spirit of sacrifice while reinforcing unity among Muslims.
