I want to base my padlet on the fact I feel like Taxi Driver is a French new wave movie.
French new wave movies are meant to be more realistic, shot on location, longer takes, less expensive, based on younger characters.
First of all, Taxi Driver is very realistic as we see a lot of scenes that don't add much to the movie, it just shows how the life of a taxi driver is. For example the scene where Travis needs to clean his taxi at the end of the day, it's a short scene that doesn't add much to the movie, except for the fact that it shows us a part of Travis's life. There are many scenes in the taxi where we see the point of view of Travis, we hear his passengers having very normal and unimportant discussions unimportant, which show again the realistic side of the movie.
Taxi Driver is shot on location, so it was filmed in Manhattan and not in a studio. That's another sign of a French new wave film. An example of a scene shot on location is when Travis goes to meet Betsy at the place where she works.
Longer takes is the next reason this is a French new wave movie, this feels like a slow paced movie with longer takes, which makes it feel more realistic.
French new wave movies are less expensive for many reasons, including that it is shot on location, natural light etc... I feel like that fits Taxi Driver well as it does not look expensive. Taxi Driver uses natural light, and as we said it is shot on location.
And finally, French new wave movies are based on younger characters. In the case of Taxi Driver, there is a 12 year old character that becomes very important near the end of the movie, that is Iris. She is a sex worker at such a young age and making her one of the main characters of this movie makes it seem like a French new wave movie.
In conclusion, I think that this movie fits perfectly in the the French new wave movement for the reasons I've explained in this padlet.
