Stamp Act passed

An act that requires all paper goods to have a stamp (which costs money) on them. Colonists did not like the Stamp Act. They rioted against it. Most of the people sent to enforce the Stamp Act quit. It showed the colonists that they could stand up to Britain.

Stamp Act Congress

A group of colonist representatives from 9 of the American colonies met together to identify ways to negate the Stamp Act. They organized protests and were able get the British government to repeal the Stamp Act. This showed they could stand up against harmful British laws.

The Townshend Acts were taken out of law because of backlash from the colonies. Showed Britain giving the colonies the win again. This led to a temporary period of somewhat peace between England and the colonies.

Brief Description: After being aggravated about acts and laws England kept placing on the colonists, a crew of Massachusetts men jumped onto East India Company ships and dumped cartons of tea into the ocean.

So What/Significance Towards Independence: This was the ultimate rebellion against Britain. Through this event, Britain started paying more attention to the colonies and threats. Also created the phrase “No taxation without representation”

The Quartering Act

So What: This act forced colonists to house, feed, transport, and give fuel to British soldiers as they patrolled and kept colonists in order, paying homage to their monarch in Britain.

First Continental Congress

Brief Description: Representatives from 12 out of 13 of the first American colonies met up in Pennsylvania to debate their conflicts with Britain.

So What/Significance Towards Independence: This was the first American congress that organized between most of the colonies and brought them unity and strength as they prepared to fight Britain.

Brief Description: The war that started after the Battles of Lexington and Concord was a way for the 13 colonies to rebel and officially separate themself from Britain.

So What/Significance Towards Independence: This war socially separated Britain from the colonies and was the start of Americans fighting for Independence.

Tea Act Passed

Brief Description: Allowed the British East India Tea Company to sell directly to the colonies without tax. People who sold tea before couldn’t make money from it anymore because the British East India Company’s tea was much cheaper.

So What/Significance Towards Independence: Caused the Boston Tea Party, which was a huge thing. It made Britain close off Boston’s harbors to trade, and just generally made tensions high.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE SIGNED

So What/Significance Towards Independence: It was one of the first things that spoke of separating from England. Most people had just wanted to get some representation in parliament.
