title: A nerd
Merriam Webster said that a nerd is an unattractive and unstylish person. However, I feel like there is more we can define a nerd. Nerds are usually smart people who does not have social lives. They don’t go on social media like the other teenagers do. They spend their free time studying alone. A nerd has very few friends. However, they are usually a very nice person. Also, the nerds usually wear a button shirt, jeans and a pair of glasses. A nerd care what others think of them.

People usually can’t differentiate a nerd and a geek. Unlike a nerd, a geek has social lives. However, they spend their time on social media about the things that they are obsessed with. Other than that, a geek is more outgoing compare to a nerd. The geeks will usually wear thing that they are obsessed with on their body. A geek doesn’t really care what others think about them.

I have met a geek and a nerd in my high school. The geek is one of my classmate, she was obsessed with Anime. She went on YouTube and watched Anime when the teacher is teaching in class. One of classmate, insulted her favorite Anime movie. She got so mad and hit that boy with a thick textbook. She also like to cosplay, she will bring all those cute cat ear hairbands to school. I met a nerd in the library. I was looking for a book but I couldn’t find it. She came up to me and helped me. She was sweet and nice. After school, she went to the teacher’s room because she wanted to ask questions.

A nerd is a person who like to glue their eyes on books. They don’t like to go on social media but they have a nice personality.

Nerd
The word Nerd and Geek are subtly different. Nerds are smart, people who lack much of a social life and they often have very few friends. A nice things about the nerds are, they are usually nice to people, but lack the social skills to go out and meet new friends. Geeks are different from nerds in the fact that they have social lives and these social lives are often spent pursuing some passion that geek is obsessed with. They spend all their time thinking about their one obsession, and play it in all of their free time

First of all, examples for a geek is Sheldon Chopper who is a fictional character who played by Jim Parsons. He is a guy with Ph.d and Sc.D. In the television series, he is a genius but his was of speaking is very weird. He can somehow talk about nonsense that is not related to the topic and go way deeper. The reason I put him in geek category because the way he speaks and the ways he treat a person. Geeks are usually only friends with other geeks, and attempts to converse with geeks is futile, unless, of course, you want to talk about Star Trek or whatever the certain geek is obsessed with. Examples of geek obsessions are Star Trek, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic the Gathering, StarCraft, and basically any other RPG.

Furthermore ,an example of nerd is Bruce Banner who is a fictional character from Marvel Comic. He is a scientist who invent a lot of types of medicine. He is also a superhero that turn green when he is mad. I consider him as a nerd because he has not much friend and he only study.

The last but not least, the differences between geeks and nerds are enthusiast of a particular topic or field. Geeks are collection oriented, gathering facts and mementos related to their subject of interest. They are obsessed with the newest, coolest, trendiest things that their subject has to offer. A studious intellectual, although again of a particular topic or field. Nerds are “achievement” oriented, and focus their efforts on acquiring knowledge and skill over trivia and memorabilia.

In conclusion, both are dedicated to their subjects, and sometimes socially awkward. The distinction is that geeks are fans of their subjects, and nerds are practitioners of them. A computer geek might read Wired and tap the Silicon Valley rumor-mill for leads on the next hot-new-thing, while a computer nerd might read CLRS and keep an eye out for clever new ways of applying Dijkstra’s algorithm. Note that, while not synonyms, they are not necessarily distinct either: many geeks are also nerds (and vice versa).

Tilte(Nerd)

What is nerd? According to Cambridge Dictionary, nerd is a person, especially a man, who is not attractive and is awkward or socially embarrassing. In other words, nerd has a little to do with a person’s appearance or even outfit, it is determined by their personality.

Nowadays, we claim people as a nerd judging by their appearance. In my opinion, the most common characteristic of a nerd’s outfit is someone with a thick glassed spectacles, holding a book alongside, exceptionally IT savvy and foremost with an awful hairstyle. Undeniably, it is a stereotype which is instilled in our mind.

Yet, a basketball school team leader, Zac, who was my high school friend was perfectly matched with the aforementioned characteristics. Nonetheless, he had a charisma that people were willing to approach him unlike the way people treat a nerd. None of the students ever claimed him as a nerd.

So, does a non-nerd necessarily have to appear to be looking smart?

Then, how can we describe someone aptly as a nerd?

There was a friend of mine back in high school again, Jason. He looked fabulously charming, without any book in his hand, computer wasn’t existent in his life as well as he had a fashionable hairstyle. However, he was certainly a nerd in my view. He had the ability to repel anyone by just speaking casually; he wasn’t capable to get out of his small social circle with his gifted appearance. Despite of the aforementioned characteristic, he was claimed to be a complete nerd.

Therefore, the true definition of ‘nerd’ to me is that someone who is inferior in engaging with people socially, who has lack of social as well as communication skills. In fact, many successful people claim themselves as a nerd such as Bill Gates. Hence, it is true that nerd is inferior to others, however, they are having a living style which is deviated from others.

Since I was very young, I have constantly heard about the word “A Nerd”. Every time I see foreign movies of TV shows, they always portrayed “A Nerd” as a person with a thick horn spectacles and a book in his hand, and also had a poor sense of style. Since it was one of the words that I was the most familiar with because of the media, I wonder about the intrinsic meaning of the word. According to the dictionary, “A nerd” means “a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious.” For me, it doesn’t make sense because explained “A Nerd” so negatively. I started to think deeply about the real meaning and reached to the answer. “A Nerd” means a person who is intelligent and obsessive with a particular area, but has a lack of social skills.

There are a lot of terms with a similar meaning like “A Geek”, “A Dork”, or “A Dweeb”. However, those words express a little bit different meanings. “A Dork” and “A Dweeb” also means a person who lacks social skills, but doesn’t mean a person who is smart in some areas. “A Geek” is similar to “A Nerd” in that it represents a person who is crazy about a specific area, but “A Geek” copes better with the social skills than “A Nerd”.

When I was in my high school, there was a girl who can be represented as a great example of “A Nerd”. Her grade was really great. She always got A on the test. But as I remember, she didn’t have many friends because she was so obsessed with studying. She especially liked economics, so she made a club that studies about economics. Moreover, she got a lot of certificates about economics. In my high school, the students rarely care about her since she was so quiet and not really sociable. After I graduated from high school, I heard that she went to the top university in Korea and her major was economics. In my opinion, she was the person who was “A Nerd” herself.

What I want to say is, the term “A Nerd” is not as bad as people think. It could be really great because the girl I explained above made a great success in her life. Many people describe “A Nerd” as a social misfit, but it is not true. Even though they have lack of social skills, it is not all. “A Nerd” also could be a positive meaning. They would be much more intelligent than others are in some areas, just like the girl in my high school who was good at economics. Maybe the student you called “A Nerd” might be a boss of the company you applied for.

When I was in primary school, I had a friend named Joshua. He was known to be the smartest kid in the class not only that he was one of the most well known students to be attached with all our teachers. I as a year one student did not really bother of what was happening around me but most of my friends started teasing him with the word ‘teachers pet’. I wondered what was the meaning of the word. Weather it was bad or good because usually my friends tease people with nasty words. One day I went up to Joshua and asked him personally what was the meaning of the word. He then answered with,

‘Teachers pet, is a like how the teacher uses you to do things’,

I was shocked with the answer he gave me. I was debating in my mind weather or not I would believe him because he was considered the brightest student in the class and the teachers did asked Joshua to do many things like how he has to bring the teachers stuff to her car everyday. In my mind I taught of words similar to ‘teacher’s pet’ like ‘goody two shoes’ but it did not really fit in well because the word ‘goody two shoes’ is used for a person who is well behaved or ostentatious virtuous. Not only that the word ‘goody two shoes’ is referred to a person who always sits in front, waves her hand to answer every question in class and tattle tales on people on the playground. Basically ‘goody two shoes’ is like a person who seeks attention.

I then though about it for a while. I then realized that the word ‘teachers pet’ was not even related to the word ‘goody two shoes’. ‘Teachers pet’ is defined as the teacher’s favorite pupil. For example, a typical pupil in class who always gets the pride and the special from the teacher. A ‘teachers pet’ is usually very smart. It was true because of how my teacher really made Joshua the king in class and always treating him with different kinds of goodies. He was also the only one receiving these treats from all our teachers. For me I would say that a teacher’s pet is a pupil who is spoiled with the teachers love and I feel it is unfair for other students because they do not get the same attention as the ‘teacher’s pet’.

In conclusion, the real meaning of a ‘teachers pet’ stated by Merriam Webster is a pupil who has won the teacher's special favour or better known as a person who is treated as a favourite by one in authority. This specifies the definition of the word ‘teacher’s pet’

teacher's pet

I had never heard the phrase “teacher’s pet” until I read it in the lecture slide. Then, I could not imagine what it means especially when I read the phrase the first time. The word of a “pet” is usually defined as an animal like a dog, a cat, or fish that people have and cherish at home. Thus, this phrase also can mean the teacher’s dog, cat or whatever he or she has at home. It was too normal to be on the list so I began thinking of it other ways.

During thinking, I came up with one idea that a “pet” does not mean an animal but a student for this phrase. That is why a word of “teacher” is used as well. Therefore, the definition of a “teacher’s pet” is basically a student who wants to be cherished by a teacher better than other students. It does not mean that a student does just as a teacher says or a teacher can ask a student to do favors anytime. Instead it, the student wants to be the one who is given a special treatment by a teacher with doing what a teacher would feel happy, for example, to open a door for the teacher, to speak out in class actively and obviously, to follow a teacher and have his or her stuff to the desk. However, the student might be hated by other students as he or she is focusing on only getting favor with a teacher but he or she does not consider that how other students feel.

I had a friend who can be said as a “teacher’s pet” in Japan. He had not been a smart student and had not had any talents. Yet he did act that he loved every subject and loved each of the teachers to get bonus points from each of them although he did not like to study truly. We, all of the classmates, knew the fact that he was just acting. He always talked about teachers behind their backs when we were together just friends. He deceived teachers into making thought that he was a student who worked on study actively, and obediently, then, he could become teachers’ favorite student, and he got good grades. Although other students did not like him, I thought he was not a bad person and he was organized and had a people skill because he was satisfied with being one of the most teachers’ favorite students.

Therefore, the definition of a “teacher’s pet” to me is a student who always flatters the teacher to get a special treatment from the teacher. In addition, the student must have a skill of getting along in life.

“A Jock”

In my college years, my college had a great cheerleading team and a pretty okay football team. My best friend was a cheerleader and was dating a jock. When I first heard the word I was wondering what kind of a word is jock? I mean sure there are many Hollywood movies where this word is used so though I was familiar with it, I did not know what it really meant. The only thing that I could come up with after thinking was a “jock” was referred to people or dudes who were a part of the sports team. I felt it was not a very intricate or detailed definition.

I started wondering what was the difference between “a jock” and an
“athlete”. The main difference was in the behavior of each of these. An athlete’s love for their sport, their down to earth nature and their friendly personality differentiates them from a jock. A jocks rude and arrogant behavior can be easily distinguished though their mannerisms. They also only associate mainly with other jocks and have a tendency to abuse their personality and also have rumors and get into scandals.

As I said, when my best friend was dating a jock I understood really what it meant. She had always been a happy go lucky girl who had her own values and lived independently with no one questioning or undermining her. But after she started dating a jock it all went downhill. In the beginning, he was nice to her but then he started to control whoever she spoke to. He was also verbally abusing her every time they had a fight. In my college day’s I used to be so worried about her. At one point, she had end of the relationship because it was getting out of hand and affecting her badly. In my opinion jocks are not the right kind of person to hang out with.

Therefore, to conclude I can say that the word jock has a negative connotation. Many people would say that they are very popular and everyone likes them. Even with this much of popularity they are very egoistic and however cool they are, their mannerisms towards others are very negative. They can also be considered as spoilt brats, therefore, their parents pay for everything and they generally have no interest in academics.

"Kiasu"

As a law abiding citizen in Malaysia, I was hanging out with my friends, which one of them is from Australia named James. When we were chatting, one of my friends said the word "Kiasu" in his speech. James was having a hard time to understand the word "Kiasu".

'What does "Kiasu" mean, Nick?" James asked. At first, I did not understand the word"Kiasu" itself. The word derives from Hokkien, which means, in my own interpretation, someone who is afraid of something. I then replied: 'It means someone who is afraid of something.' James then gave a self nod in response to my rough definition.

As Malaysians, everyone should know what is the meaning of "kiasu", especially in Penang state. I started to wonder whether I defined "kiasu" correctly or not. Later, I did research on the word "kiasu" . It turns out the true definition is an anxious person not to lose out on opportunities. It is also a Hokkien word derived from the Mandarin word 怕输（pa su). "Kiasu" also means a person having a selfish attitude. The suitable English word for "kiasu" is "overcompetitiveness".

What makes the word "kiasu" so unique is that for example, if a girl saw her favorite clothes that had limited stock, she could not bear to lose it and better buy it fast, therefore being "kiasu". Another example of "kiasu", this time defining as a person with selfish attitude, is when someone does not want to offer help, whether being a blind man wants to cross a road, or an old lady who takes a train and realized all the seats are full. Hence, the people there are "kiasu".

Overall, comparing between my interpretation of "kiasu" and the dictionary meaning of "kiasu", I can confidently explain that the word "kiasu" means being afraid to lose out on opportunities as well as having a selfish attitude, which has mostly a negative effect towards people. No matter what society people are in, there are many who have overcompetitiveness in order to get a head start in this 'competition'. There are also people who are selfish to not offer help towards strangers.

'A geek'

I had always assumed that the meaning of ‘geek’ is similar to that of ‘noob’: someone who is a newbie, who lacks experience to perform well in a particular task. During breaks or at times when I have nothing to do, I would always play a computer game called League of Legends (LoL). It is a 5 versus 5 strategic game that lasts averagely for 40-60 minutes per game, and in each game, we will be teamed up with random people at our level range.

As my gaming skill level was not up to par yet, I was often called a ‘noob’ by some arrogant and immature gamers who in fact, were not playing that well either. Usually I would just ignore by muting them, however, there was once a player was blabbering non-stop about how bad I played and I was legitimately triggered. I typed out the word ‘geek’ into the chat and instantly muted that player. As it was only him that I muted, I can still see what the 3 other players were talking about. The 3 of them gave me similar reactions: ‘???’, ‘huh?’, and ‘what?’. Clearly, I must have backfired myself by using the wrong term, I felt utterly embarrassed then.

Immediately after the game, I went on Google to search for the meaning of ‘geek’. Little did I know I presumed the meaning of geek wrongly for so many years! Apparently, the word ‘geek’ is used to describe someone who is obsessed with a hobby, or someone who is perceived to be overly intellectual, unfashionable or socially awkward. Thinking it over, I have seen people like that before, but I thought of them as nerds instead. A geek is not necessarily a fool or a freak, because some knowledgeable people can be geeks too.

I came across a group of 6 sci-fi geeks when I was working in Starbucks as a part-timer a few months back. They were wearing Star Wars-themed hats and t-shirts, carrying lightsaber printed sling bags and playing Star Wars-themed UNO cards. It must have sounded as though they were teenagers, but apparently, they age at least 25-30. My colleagues were giggling at because of how they dressed. Honestly, I found it funny too, but hey, they can do what they like and I should not judge.

A geek, although may do ridiculous and extraordinary things, is a human too. The only difference is that a geek is overly obsessed with what he or she is interested in. If there is a day that I too, am obsessed with the game LoL, and eventually become a geek who wears and brings all LoL merchandises around, I do not think I will care of how people look at me, as long as I am able to portray the love I have for that game.

Drama QueenS

According to Cambridge Dictionary, the term 'drama queen' is used to describe a person who gets upset over minor things. We often hear our friends or acquaintance complain about another person being a drama queen. But in these gossips were these people angry over minor things or something else? In my own interpretation, a drama queen is someone who seek attention from not just one, but everyone.

"God, she is so noisy!" I exclaimed. "She's just having a bad time, maybe she is on her period too?" replied my friend. It is a common excuse for women to be more 'emotional' than man. And for that reason, apart from being gorgeous, women are given more attention than man are. They are cared for, showered with clothes and affection, love and anything they would want.

However, what happens when they don't get the attention they want? "OH MY GOD, DID YOU KNOW WHAT TIME I SLEPT LAST NIGHT? I'M SO TIRED, I STILL HAVE LOTS OF WORK TO DO!" proudly presented a girl from my class. Being triggered, I instantly stood up and walk outside of class. It wasn't the first, perhaps the thousandth time she has been saying this not just to her group of friends, but loud enough for an entire class to hear and comfort her. This, is what I call, attention seeking or in other words, drama queen.

Drama queen isn't someone who gets angry over something easily, that's a short tempered person. An attention seeker also isn't someone who is a drama queen, we all need love and attention. It's healthy in fact to have love and attention. We don't want lonely and sad lives. But someone to be a drama queen is to act upon something or for someone, just to get attention. And at some cases, it can go really bad.

All in all, a drama queen is a person who pretends to do something or over exaggarate to get attention. Although we all need love and attention, nevertheless we should not go too far to get it. It is cowardly and impolite. Furthermore, we should not depend on receving attention to determine where we stand in our social standing.

Mangkuk

Mangkuk is merely a plate or a bowl.First of all,I had always assumed that having a conversation with shouted in the words “Mangkuk”.They need a bowl or a plate. At the end,the person who has been scolded with a loud voice didn’t give them a bowl or even a plate.According to any Cambridge or Oxford Dictionary, can’t even really find in definition. However,I have realized that one of the ways the Malaysian spoke especially Malay and Chinese. In my own interpretation, "Mangkuk" is someone who self-absorbed jackass.

While all the way of thinking, what’s the mangkuk actually tried to mean? Why the people always get to be scolded by other with “Mangkuk”? Why people always get mad at the one’s scolding them with the “ Mangkuk”. Mangkuk as defined as an self-absobed jackass, which means who irritates the person who was in such a black mood at the moment.

Recovered back of my memories,I had a friend who always tagged by the others as Mangkuk. He’s a junior,John,14 years old.John was the only one child in his family.Although he had a filthy rich background, he endured a lot of discussion and controversy because of his intelligence .Moreover, lots of appellation of “friends” took his advantages, bullied him with extortion.Everyone in the class sneered him as Mangkuk, dunce or idiot.Dunce is the one who is slow at learning the things.Idiot is the one who doing the wrong things in terms of funny or making a joke. In contrast to self-absorbed jackass and dunce or idiot, dunce and idiot know what they are trying to do,although slow in progress or making a fun to the others,self-absorbed jackass doesn’t when and what they are doing wrong.John as defined as Mangkuk because of his attitude. He didn't know why people against him personally, but he still rejected to introspection of himself. He still said that "He's doing the things that good for the others,by giving them what advantages they need, some extraordinary and ridiculous things."

In conclusion, dunce and idiot are different to the one's self-absorbed jackass."Mangkuk" as defined to me as a self-absorbed jackass who doesn't mean to be one which special but he doesn't mean to know where and when he did the wrong things especially irritate someone who's pissed off.

Lala

The term “lala” is often heard in Malaysia and Singapore amongst the younger generation. But what does lala mean outside of Malaysia and Singapore? First off there are many definitions of lala on the urban dictionary, from a character from teletubbies to marijuana. But the top definition of lala on urban dictionary is “to do something obscene or kinky that isn’t able to be said delicately”. However in Malaysia there are 2 meanings to lala, first off to the older generations lala can simply mean a kind of Cantonese seafood. But for the younger generation, lala basically means someone who has a flashy, gaudy appearance, and only their own kind would be attracted to them.

Lala is only used for Chinese and it can be applied to both male and female, for a male it’s called “lala zai” whiles a female is called “lala mui”. A typical lala zai would have brightly coloured hair and their outfit is basically slippers, sling bags and a Baby G watch. For girls its heavy make-up, outstanding clothes and accessories and also brightly coloured hair. They may think that their fashion is “on point” but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Most lala guys and girls get their inspiration from Chinese, Hong Kong and Korean actors and actresses hence their outstanding outfit. But most of the time they would not look like the actor or actress they wish to look like because they would always overdo it.

There are a lot of photo editing software these days like Photoshop and VSCO. But the lala squad wouldn’t touch those basic and simple software. Instate they would use something like “Meitu”, which is made in Hong Kong. The differences between VSCO and Meitu is that Meitu is much more advance, it allows users to enlarge their eyes, sharpen their jaws and whiten their skin. And the lala squad love to edit their faces till the end result looks nothing like the original. Before the photo is taken they would usually have a “cute” pose, this is what I like to call the “lala pose”, examples of these poses are having a sideways peace sign beside the eye or on the cheeks and making a fist and putting it on the cheek whiles pouting the face.

I have met a lot of lala guys and girls from social media, schools and malls, and they seem like nice people although some are a wannabe gangster/punks. they would usually hang out in an arcade, where they could put all the tokens in their sling bag and play arcade racing games. I personally don’t know anyone who is lala, however there’s a saying that all lala guys and girls came from Chinese schools, and I was from a Chinese school but unfortunately I don’t know anyone who is lala and I didn’t become one myself.

People who are lala are being made fun of either as a meme or as something weird, just because you don’t understand their lifestyle doesn’t mean you have the right to judge them. So in conclusion I would like to state that “lala” the term has different meaning in different country and with different people. So be careful of the term” lala” because you might either end up asking for sex, marijuana or a Cantonese seafood.

A Cry Baby

When I was little, I came across the term "crybaby". I was visiting my mother when she just delivered my younger brother. The moment I saw my younger brother, he began to cry. That is when I said, "Mum, brother is a crybaby." My parents looked at me and asked, "What are saying?" I was confused until they explained to me. I used to think that the term "cry baby" means the baby is crying. Apparently that's not the case.

The term "cry baby" comes from a phase "someone cries like a baby". The term came from around 1850 when someone thought of an idea to describe a fully grown-up cries over little reasons to begin with. Contrary to the actual word used, a cry baby neither cries nor is an infant, but is a fully grown adult who whines too much and should know better.

However, the term crybaby has another similar meaning. It is used to describe people who normally complain about the most petty things, like there being no packets of brown sugar on their hotel room tea tray, the fact the train is four minutes late, and things are not going the way they wanted.

You might be tempted to call someone whose feelings are very easily hurt, who is extremely sensitive and quick to burst into tears, a crybaby. It's a fairly derogatory term but being called a "crybaby" will only make a crybaby cry even harder.

The only acceptable way to deal with a cry baby is when they pretend to physically cry or they start complaining, by rubbing ones eyes and quivering ones bottom lip in a totally over-the-top manner, followed by the put-down "don't cry about it".

So grow up and don't be a crybaby.

Origin of kiasu is from Hokkien slang which “Kia” means afraid and “su” means lose. Kiasu people are very determine to win but they are greedy and selfish to others. For example, during final exam, if kiasu people have tips for the exam they tend to won’t let anyone know because they don’t want anyone to get better score than them.

This reminds me of a friend of mine who is very kiasu. His name is Des, he was one of my classmate during high school. It was one week before final exam. Everyone was busy revising and asking for tips from teachers. Teachers refused to leak any tips for final exam because they would get fire by school if they leak any questions from exam paper. Then I remembered that Des is one of the student who always scored well in his exam. Then I decided to ask exam tips from him but he said he don’t have any tip.

After the final exam result came out he scored well again. After that only we realised that he had final exam questions from his tuition teacher who from the school. Then, everyone gave him a nickname which is “Kiasu Des”. That was the first time I heard Kiasu and since I’m not hokkien, I don’t know what’s that mean. Then I asked my Hokkien friend and they told me that kiasu mean scare of losing to other people or don’t want anyone to get better than them.

All in all, Kiasu mean a person who have selfish attitude or scare of lose. It mostly used by Singaporean and Malaysian. Kiasu people might have bad impression to other people, but they have the spirit to become the best among all of the people. Why do they always call me a "cry baby"?, I've always wondering. I really always wanted them to stop calling me like that.
Sometimes I really questioned myself, "Why do I cry?" The phrase made me re-think and this incident happened when I was 11.
It was a peacefully morning when I was a my first sleepover at my friends house for a Hari Raya party at my friends place, whos name Amanda. I was full with excitment opening my eyes seeing my friends. When time passes, Amanda's mother took all us out for breakfast at McDonalds. Knowing that my parents never allowed me to eat fast food like McDonalds, I started to freak out as I wad too young and didnt know what to do. Thinking that if I joined them for McDonalds I would get scolded by my parents. So i panicked and started to cry. All my friends were staring at me and all pointed me and stated the phrase that I was a cry baby. I felted embarrassed and quickly reflected that I should cry.
After that day, I told myself that I shouldn't simply cry because of a small situation like this.

Kiasu

What is “kiasu” ? According to the Urban Dictionary, kiasu is a person who is afraid of “losing out” to other people. In other words, having an attitude that one cannot lose to others in any circumstance. This attitude is majorly present in students wanting to score better than their friends in school and parents wanting their child to be better than their relative’s child.

When I was in high school I could see many people like this, especially in the science classes, although some do exist in the sub-science and arts. However, if one were to look at them from a distance they wouldn’t look like the kiasu person you had in mind. They were outgoing, friendly and most of all knowledgeable people.

But, without a doubt there is a reason why people call them kiasu. And I saw it through my very eyes when one of my classmates, Jozhua received his examination results. He was always top of the class scoring highest for every subject, but when our Chemistry papers were handed out, the tables turned. He wasn’t the highest for this subject, and to my surprise it was me! He turned around to look at my paper in astonishment, but slowly could see it in his eyes. He was slightly tearing, filled with anger and determination to do better on the next test. And on the next test, he eventually beat in results by a single mark.

He laughed with joy and I was sitting there judging him on how on can be selfishly driven by digits on a paper. But it was then I realised, he wasn’t doing it for his parents nor for us, he wanted to succeed. He wanted to be the best he can be and that was somewhat admirable. Without a doubt, he had the wrongs mindset towards it, but I admired the way one can push one’s self to achieve his or her goals just because of others.

Hence, a person who is kiasu may not just be selfishly afraid of losing out but selfishly in need for success to be the best. This behaviour is present in all of us if we take a step back, to succeed we must push ourselves. And that is what a kiasu person in my observation is.

Cry Baby

What is a “cry baby”? The term itself may seem pretty self explanatory as you would think, a “cry baby” is just a baby that cries; but is that what it really means though? Upon researching, I’ve found out that a “cry baby” is defined as a person, especially a child, who shed tears frequently or readily. Hence, meaning that a “cry baby” isn't just a term to describe babies but also to describe a grown adult when they cry.

Words like sissy or mama’s boy that can somewhat mean the same as a “cry baby” yet its still very different as a “cry baby” isn’t necessarily someone or a person who is regarded as a coward, weakling or wimp because he/she can be masculine yet whine about the littlest of things. A “cry baby” can't be described as an excessively influenced by or attached person to his/her mother which what a mama’s boy is.

Furthermore, according to urban dictionary, a “cry baby” neither cries nor is an infant but is a fully grown adult who whines too much and should know better. Meaning that a “cry baby” will complain about the most petty things, like there being no packets of brown sugar instead they have normal plain sugar, the fact that the flight is delayed longer or even being dumped by their significant other for their own wrong doings.

Thinking about this, I actually do know someone whom I can actually call a “cry baby”. In university, there was this girl in my calculus class that is forever complaining and whining over the fact that our lecturer enjoys giving impromptu quizzes or test. She doesn’t shed tears yet she’s the perfect example of a “cry baby”. She uses so much time to whine about it when instead, she could use that time to study and do well for those impromptus.

Hence, in my opinion, a “cry baby” is concluded to be a person who gets easily upset if they don't get it their own way, who whines and throws a fit over silly issues, who complains over and over again over slight matter, who whines just to seek attention and argue with no purpose or reason.

                LOVE
According to the Oxford American Dictionary “…Love is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection”. This is the “officially accepted” definition of love. Nevertheless, it is necessary to mention that love is notion that has caused many arguments concerning its meaning throughout the ages. Many people have tried their best to define this phenomenon but each person puts individual interpretation in it and therefore a priori there cannot be any objective definition of the term “love”. Love in psychological terms does not contain only positive aspects as it is usually stated.

Love is a unique feeling of respect, adoration, desire for a given individual or “object” which eventually makes the person to become one whole entity and at the same time reveals the dependence on the object of love as a carrier of a unique combination of the proportion of certain qualities or peculiarities. In terms of psychological aspects, love has a dual character as it shapes the personality of the person from two positions: the first one brings happiness, harmony and adoration not only for a given “object” but to the world around; the second brings a misbalance and dependence on the presence of a given person in the life and in the world around. In other words love is strength and love is weakness of the consciousness of any individual.

The first half of the definition states that love is the person’s psychological strength. By this statement it is assumed that it makes the person stronger through the harmonization of the personality or in other words through obtaining a constant source of positive emotions. Such side of love deals with the person’s self-acquisition. This is especially important due to the fact that a person on his own is a closed system and love as an attachment to another person or object opens this system and makes it complete. For instance, a person who starts experiencing the unique feeling of affection, attachment, respect, adoration and desire for a given person or objects become generally psychologically stable. This stability occurs as the result of the person being concentrated on this given “object” and receiving a vast amount of positive emotions communicating with this object. This is always a good stimulus for any kind of activity. As the person tends to prolong the emotional harmony he becomes psychologically mature enough to take certain responsible steps required to be with the loved “object”.

In other words, love implies the mobilization of the psychological resources of the person. This is the reason when people do love, sometimes they do things they wouldn’t ordinary do. The loved object provides the person with the psychological protection from all obstacles.

On the other side, in the second half of the definition states that love is a weakness. In terms of the psychological health of the person love brings misbalance and dependence on the loved object. The person cannot imagine the life without the loved object and the mood depends on the ability to interact with “it”. The person starts experiencing fear of loosing the meaningful other, sometimes the desire to makes everything perfect results in unnecessary actions, thoughts, quarrels. The weakness of love is the impossibility to live a “happy” life, the impossibility to be a harmonic personality without the loved person. For instance, if a person starts numerous attempts to please the meaningful other, if the amount of compromises increases form day to day, if even the though that something might happen to that person tears the heart this is the point where the weakness of love comes into play. The weakness is that the person can agree to do something that normally would consider being a humiliation or a step away from the principles.

Love truly is strength but it is also a weakness with all its compromises the person does. Love is not just a fairy tale with no negative manifestations. It has two sides: the white and the black, where the end of one is the beginning of the other. The truth is that love is tremendously difficult to define and is one of those terms that will be always argued and analyzed. Loves gives a lot to the person and also takes a lot from him as the price for the good. Maybe it is how the balance of the universe is achieved. Or maybe love is the strength of the weak and the weakness of the strong?

Drama Queen

Among a group of female friends around you, there's always one out of all the pretty who is being call as a "drama queen”, but what exactly is "drama queen"? According to dictionary.com, "drama queen" describe a person who often had exaggerated or overly emotional reactions to events or situation.

“Oh my god! You copied that without giving the other person credit! That is just mean. You’re horrible, don’t talk to me. I’m gonna go tell everyone what a cruel person you are just so they will pay attention to me and think I’m cool.” said my friend. This is what most of the people thinks drama queens are which they often turn something unimportant into a major deal. Someone who blows things way out of proportion whenever the chance is given, which it’s also true that what a drama queens is like.

Nevertheless, some girl are sometimes very noisy without any specific reason and it’s always being excused that they are having their period which is a very common excuses being used by them. Women are often being care more by others compared to men because of the way they package themselves by their cloths and appearance.

However, when they sometimes were not being noticed by others, they will try their very best to exaggerate. “I’m super super sick of doing these wrappings. I have been doing it since last week and because of this I had lost a lot a lot of my sleeping time. Why am I so good at this while nobody else can do my part!” shouted Kim in the office. Not everyone in the office will go forward and help her, at least not the old colleagues, as we already know all she need were just people to comfort and care about her. Unintentionally, this is what we called the “drama queen”.

Just some simple tips for you, if you have come across working with ur lady boss where you found out she is a drama queen, remember that all you have to do is to looks at her and listen what she says and don’t fight back as they will never be satisfied enough.

All in all, a drama queens is a person who habitually responds to situation in a melodramatic way. Of course everybody in this worlds sometimes need some drama to success, but don’t go too far beyond it to get what you want. Remember to set yourself a limit every single time.

Nerd

Have you ever been called a nerd in school? Ever seen one or interacted with one before? What are nerds? Believe it or not, we are now living in a world where nerds do impact our world and society. I choose this topic because it reflects me the most. Throughout my secondary school life, I was hailed as a nerd for not only focusing heavily on academics, but also my behavior.

According to its first definition of the word, a nerd is a "foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious." That sounds about right. But Oxford's first definition of geek is synonymous: "An unfashionable or socially inept person." Oxford's second definitions of both words are also synonymous, nerd as "an intelligent, single-minded expert in a particular technical discipline or profession" and geek as "a person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest. (Goldsborough, 2010)

This generally could be considered to mean that the terms of geeks and nerds are completely and utterly synonymous but, people in the modern nerd and geek culture may disagree. If one mentioned this definition to a person who considers themselves a geek or nerd they would highly disagree these people know that there is a great difference between a nerd and a geek. While they may not be able to give a distinct, concise definition they know full well that there is a big difference. This is expressed in the Goldsborough article as well.

The best distinction I've heard is that the word "nerd" connotes social awkwardness while "geek" conveys specialized expertise and devotion. The former is negative, the latter positive. In a 2007 interview on The Colbert Report, author Richard Clarke said the difference between nerds and geeks is "geeks get it done." (Goldsborough, 2010)

These are both well stated definitions of nerd and geek; they provide a modern view of the terms alongside a modern definition of them. It can be generally assumed from the provided definitions that nerds are social outcasts and geeks, while being on the boarder of being social outcasts, manage to still be able to make friends and do their job fairly well. There are also some other thoughts inside being a nerd and a geek that these definitions don’t touch upon, such as enjoying comics, video games, or role playing games like dungeons and dragons.
