Streptococcus, also known as Strep, is a bacterial infection. The symptoms of this infection are sore throat, white patches in the throat, fever and/or chills, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, and nausea or vomiting. If strep goes untreated, it can worsen and become tonsillitis where the tonsils are inflamed. To prevent Strep, practice and attain good hygiene, avoid coming into contact with infected individuals, avoid drinking and eating after one another, stay home when sick, and cover the mouth when coughing and sneezing. Everyone can be infected by strep throat, but usually, children between the ages of 5 and 15 become affected more than others. Humans acquire strep throat through contact with the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes. Lastly, an individual can treat strep by primarily being treated with antibiotics. Some pain relievers can help with the pain for instance Tylenol and Motrin, but the true treatment is antibiotics.
