Brancusi was born in Hobitza, Romania, on February 19, 1876, Constantin Brancusi was born. He studied painting from 1894 to 1898 at Craiova's Scoala de Meserii (School of Arts and Crafts) and from 1898 to 1902 at Bucharest's Scoala Natzionala de Arte Frumoase (National School of Fine Arts).

Brâncuşi went to Munich in 1903 and then on to Paris. He found a warm reception from the creative and intellectual elite of Paris, who were full of fresh ideas. He spent two years working in Antonin Mercié's Atelier des Beaux-Arts before being recruited to join Auguste Rodin's.

As with Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, André Derain, and others, Brâncuși looked outside of Europe for inspiration when creating his pices of work. Other influences can be seen in Romanian traditional art and can be linked to Byzantine and Dionysian art.

Some key works of Constatin Brancusi are: The endless column, the sleeping mouse, the fish, the table of silence, the gate of the kiss etc. Brancusi's serenely simplified sculptures are widely acknowledged as icons of modernism.

He began utilizing abstracted forms and sculpting by direct carving, a method characterized by working directly with the material, as opposed to the significantly more common practice of making a model to be cast or executed by others.

Constantin Brancusi changed the nature of 20th-century modern sculpture. He liberated sculpture from preconceived notions of realism and representation, forming his own language of simplified abstraction.
