The Great Awakening

1. What was it?

The Great Awakening was a spiritual renewal that swept across American colonies especially in New England during the first half of the 1700's. This movement aimed to restore the sense of intimacy between Christian believers and God.

2.What caused it?

After a long reign of the Church of England being the leader in practicing Christianity the Great Awakening came as a response to many Christians feeling that Christianity had lost the heart and soul, so the movement came to restore it.

3. What were the effects?

One of the biggest effects of The Great Awakening was the sense of independence. Colonists felt they in longer needed to rely on the church for their faith. They soon realized they could take faith into their own hands. This shaped the mindset that led Colonists to gain their independence from England.

4. Did anyone disagree with this?

Conservative and moderate clergyman disapproved of the movement because they believed the emotion into prayer often caused disorder and discord.

Cause: fear of the outbreak of witchcraft and satanism

Certain symptoms/ facial featureswere supposedly prominent in the witch community

A way to shift blame for wartime failures, the people wanted to transfer the blame of losing wars to the fact that the devil had returned and was threatening their society

1. The Puritans were a group of English Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries, including, but not limited to, English Calvinists. Were always committed to God and had believed that the Devil was real and brought sin to people who were the weakest, not pure from God.

2.The Puritans view of God was that everybody was depraved sinners and that God chooses whoever is pure and worthy for salvation.

3. They believed that the cause of hardships and pain came from evil or from the Devil and that Satan will select the weakest to harm.

4. They had viewed sins like crime and adultery etc, as a violation of God

5.believed that all sins from stealing food from the church should be punished, believed that God would punish sinners with misfortune

such as getting sick or bad crops leaving them without food.

Women who were accused of using witchcraft and "dark magic" they were often stoned or burned at the stake by fearful neighbors. It was a dark time and anyone could turn you in for suspicious activities and you would be assumed to be a witch.

1.)His techniques were unimpressive. He would read in an uneven voice but with great conviction. He would shout and do theatrical antics. He would preach about the power of the truth and the importance of his need for god.

2.)During revivals people would experience highly unsual spiritual phenomenon. During sermons at times people would scream and drop to the floor unconscious. Even Edwards wife would stand at the corner of thier living room just frozen for lo period of times. Edwards believed this was from God.
