The English release of an anime film was delayed for 9 years after 9/11 due to similarities with the attacks

The terrorist attack that took place in New York on 9/11/01 affected not only America but the entire world around it. Unexpectedly, it also had an effect on the anime industry. That same year on April 21st, 2001 the Detective Conan franchise released its yearly movie for the 5th year in a row. This movie, Detective Conan Movie 5: Countdown to Heaven, took place in a set of newly built twin towers that are blown up by the end of the film. While Detective Conan usually takes an extra year or two to come to America, this film was delayed an English release for 9 years due to the coincidental subject matter. The IMDB page for the movie mentions this, stating that "copies of the film were withheld from home video release in the United States due to the film's plot involving the bombing of a twin tower building, as the film's DVD release was not long after 9/11, which saw the bombings of the World Trade Center buildings in New York" (2001). Even without the support of the IMDB page, it's an obvious fact simply by looking at the release dates, with the original coming out in April 2001 yet not having an American release until 2010.

Spirited Away won the Oscars' 2003 award for best Animated Feature

The Oscars first created the category of best animated feature in 2001 with the first winner being the animated powerhouse that is Shrek. The early and mid 2000s were a time when anime was nowhere near as popular as it is today, even I wasn't even allowed to watch most of the ones featured on Cartoon Network simply due to its art style. Many people would find themselves bullied or harassed for admitting they enjoyed the medium, which is why the 2003 Oscars were such a game changer. Few anime have been nominated for the specific award and "in the 20 years of the Best Animated Feature Oscar, only one anime has ever nabbed the award: 'Spirited Away' "(Shutt, 2022). The film not only won this award but ended up gathering more sales then even Titanic, proving itself to be a massive stepping stone for the anime industry paving its way into the western audience, especially the older members watching the Oscars during 2003.

Shutt, M.
The English release of Pokemon on Toonami

While some others may not see this being as important as I do, Pokemon's 2002 English anime release stood just as important as Sailor Moon's earlier 1990s English release. Toonami was the Cartoon Network platform that broadcasted anime in the 2000s and was what caused many Americans to get into anime in the first place. One of if not the most influential of them all was Pokemon. The franchise is well known from the game franchise it was based on, meaning many parents who wouldn't allow their child to watch anime would still allow their child to watch Pokemon as it was something they knew. This was the case for me as well, my dad and I both enjoyed the games so he would allow me to watch the show even though I still wasn't allowed to watch even Beyblade. The franchise once held many titles such as "the most successful computer game ever made, the top globally selling trading-card game of all time, one of the most successful children's television programs ever broadcast, the top-grossing movie ever released in Japan, and among the five top earners in the history of films worldwide" (Tobin 2004). And while many of these have since been taken over by other series since then, it still goes to show the extreme importance this release had on the western anime audience.

Joseph Tobin, “Introduction,” in Pikachu's Global Adventure: The Rise and Fall of Pokémon, ed.

Easily one of the most infamous animes ever released, School Days came out in Summer 2007 and told the coming of age story of Makoto Itou, your typical Japanese high school student who fell in love with his classmate. Although too shy to confess his love, he uses a photo of her as his phone wallpaper in the hopes of one day having the strength to. This dream is crushed by his other classmate who sees the photo. However, instead of telling on him she agrees to become friends with his crush in order to help them grow closer. What follows is a mature story best seen with no spoilers, a list of trigger warnings, and a very large glass of wine.
