I was a student at Mt. SAC, a month away from graduating. In the early evening, I was with a friend at Denny’s at Nogales & Gale Ave., witnessing the events unfold in the news. I wondered if it would reach us and I had a little bit of fear.

During that LA Riot, I was home watching the news about the LA Riot.

I was a college student and I was waiting tables at an Irish bar in Maryland. We had a lot of customers who were secret service agents. The news of the riot was shown on our big screen- I was very upset but couldn’t really talk to anyone at my work about it. One of the agents said something like he was glad “they” were burning it all down- like it would be better without.

… but I want to share what I know through the stories of my father-in-law and mother-in-law who are immigrants from Mexico and who settled in East LA back in the 80s. They were, at the time, shop owners at an indoor remate (flea market) in Los Angeles. They tell of how the news broke of the riots and they became fearful for their livelihoods, as the flea market provided for their growing family. Funny enough, my partner (their son) was born two days before the riots on April 27, 1992. So they were worried for their future but I often think about how the media played such a twisted role in pinning communities against each other because very quickly, the “sides” emerge… shop owners vs “looters”, Black folks vs. Koreans, etc. We lose sight of who is hurting most acutely, who gets caught in the cross fire, and who is perpetuating a system of harm, violence, death. Thank you for this film, helping us to interrogate systems of harm upheld by racism and police brutality.

The love and gratitude poured into each other- the fierce hug and embrace, like brother and sister.

I found the scene where the brother finally decided to let the store go particularly moving because he was really stuck on it fr but once he let that go mentally he was ready to move on fully and that’s what they needed. I also found the last scene where kamila was dancing in front of the store moving because that was really where she loved to be at fr and that’s where her spirit stayed I found that beautiful
