Music plays a big role in The Great Gatsby as The Roaring Twenties was a time period of popularity in jazz music. Jazz was a big inspiration to Fitzgerald allowing him to reference songs to set various moods throughout the novel. The songs in the novel are placed in certain scenes to represent the character's thoughts and actions as each song has their own impact to the story.

Ain't We Got Fun by Van & Schenck

Artist: Van & Schenck
Type of song: Foxtrot
Significant lyrics: Times are so bad and getting badder,
Still we have fun.
There's nothing surer,
The rich get richer and the poor get laid off!
In the meantime,
In between time,
Ain't we got fun!
Context: This song is played when Daisy arrives at Jay Gatsby's house for the first time. At the time Gatsby is very nervous about impressing Daisy and proving his success to her. He even attempts to show his worth by showing an array of shirts which Daisy finds an amount of beauty in them.
Rationale: The song reflects the hard times of the Roaring Twenties as it reflects having fun without the riches and jobs being hard to get allowing the ones who aren't as successful to create fun in their lives. Fitzgerald chose this song to represent the hardships of Gatsby's love for Daisy. He chases Daisy in the hopes that even though he wasn't always successful she could still gain love for him, as the song promotes "times are so bad and getting badder, still we have fun." This creates the idea that even if he hasn't always been rich they could still have love for each other.
