FILM: Gegen die Wand

I've had Gegen die Wand on my watchlist for a very long time and now that I started to learn german I thought it's a good time to give it a go. In today's increasing xenophobic climate, I believe it's important to return to historic examples, through great cinematography, to understand how humans can successfully tackle social seclusion and recognise the benefits of immigration and living together with different people.

The process of the assimilation of Turkish citizens in Germany has undoubtedly had its benefits and problems. I expected this film to give me a hard time understanding the language, but on the contrary, I found that I understood many words, expressions and figured out a lot by focusing on the context of dialogues. Although, the movie mainly conveys its messages through emotions, Listening to the characters' unique accent helped me understand difficulties of pronunciation (as Turkish has a lot in common with my native language, Hungarian) and stopping the movie for the purpose to repeat sentences/words/expressions with the help of the subtitles helped me a lot to practice fluency, emphasis and tone and most of all to gain a valuable cultural insight into the life of Turkish people living in Germany. Watching this movie has greatly ignited my desire to dwell in German cinematography and I'm sure there's a lot more german films I'll be curious about in the forthcoming weeks.

JOB APPLICATION: Düsseldorf

I'm currently in the process to land a job in Düsseldorf, where my girlfriend and her family lives. I've been using websites such as Monster.de, Jobspotting.de, Indeed.de and others to find jobs in the categories of copywriting, marketing executive, advertising and so on.

Having browsed these websites for nearly a month now helped me to gain a decent amount of vocabulary within the field of my interest and job descriptions as well as requirements in general for my future career. At first, I found it hard to translate every term and application form word-by-word but it also proved to be an efficient way to familiarise with basic and advanced vocabulary. In addition, I use a german dictionary on my phone to have words pronounced in order to help me remember expressions easier and practice my written and verbal skills.

I hope to progress with my german skills in the forthcoming weeks/months and learn a plethora of new words that I will hopefully be able to use when I'm there.

This short test link was perfect if you are interested in obtaining a general assessment of your German skills in a short time - much like the ones we were given during Lab times with Sonja.

Containing roughly 30 questions (taking approximately 8-10 minutes to finish) and you have to give the correct answer to at least 80% of the questions to get to the next level of tests.

The test proved to be helpful when it comes to spelling, the use of appropriate verbs, linkers and the conjugation of specific verbs. I'll keep this link on my favourites tab in order to practice more in the future.

http://www.deutsch-lernen.com/virtual/e_test_kurz.htm

Having interactive digital courses for more than 24 languages, Rosetta Stone was a great application and multidisciplinary tool to begin my journey towards exploring the German language. Fortunately, my girlfriend held a license for the software and I managed to dive headlong into pronunciation, learning a wide range of nouns, their articles and complex situational phrases and sentences that could help me out when I move to or visit Germany.

http://www.rosettastone.co.uk/lp/catalog/?cmp=sitewide&language=deu#/

This is yet another powerful online platform to begin learning German intuitively and in an entertaining way. Duolingo offers you four choices to begin learning the German language by dedicating 5-10-15 or 20 minutes per day to learn new content.

Much similar to Rosetta Stone, Duolingo allows for the acquisition of basic german nouns, expressions with their appropriate pronunciation, which can be a challenging task to master.

The placement test helped me to learn word order and comprise full german sentences as well as to translate english sentences into their german equivalents. I'd recommend this tool for anyone who's busy but can dedicate a few minutes each day to learn something new in a fun way.

https://www.duolingo.com/skill/de/Basics-1/1

I often found that language courses are not putting enough emphasis on the everyday use of the language (luckily this is not the case with this course :) ). Anyway, I was interested in learning some of the most common/useful/easily acquirable phrases that I can use when I'm speaking with a german individual.

This video helped me to learn 25 new phrases and get a better control of modal verbs, conjugation of verbs, learning new words and practicing some that we've already learnt during Classes and word order in a sentence.
