This is about the process of becoming an actor and research into what is it like to be a professional actor. It requires you to research the role and either do an essay on the topic or a presentation. There is a full helpsheet above. To achieve pass you would need to answer questions in the booklet. For a Merit you will evidence that you have done further research. Godber’s work with the Hull Truck theatre over 25 years lead him to his being dubbed ‘the true mouth of the Humber’ He was born in Yorkshire and was the Grandson of miners. He trained as teacher and then became head of drama at his old secondary school that was in Minsthorpe. The students at this school were one of the first to show many of Godber’s early plays, that won a series of awards at the national student drama festival. Godber first became an artist director of the Hull truck in 1984, he continued this position until 2010. He had a Finacle crisis, so Godber gave an attempt to impress local audiences with his first play for Hull, the comedy up ‘n’ under in 1984. This was a success and Godber continued to do this with other plays he wrote including Teechers in 1987, On the piste in 1990, The office party 1992, Gym and Tonic in 1996 and perfect pitch in 1998 which was about a group of caravanning enthusiasts. During the mid 1990’s a governments art documentary reported that Godber has become the third most performed playwright in Britian coming after Shakespear and Ayckbourn. Bouncer’s is his most popular bit of work which is a comedy about four doormen at a down-market night club, he wrote this play in 1977 but reworked his performance in the 1980’s and 1990’s. His more recent plays like on a night like this in 2000 and sold in 2007 which deals with the issue of people –trafficking, have been said to be bleaker and less ebullient than his earlier work. It is a funny, energetic piece oh highly theatrical storytelling where men are at once themselves, and every character they happen to meet on a night at work at the nightclub. In his introduction, the author writes: ‘in many ways the content informed the form. The Boredom of the men in the door spills over into grotesque violence and fantasy. The antics of the girls and boys out for a night on the town hardly need developing to make them dramatic.The conflict between those wanting a good time and those stopping a good time from being had is basic dramatic premise . . . The play is about a 17-year-old boy from the Bronx, who is sent to a private school in New Hampshire as a desperate bid to fix his misbehaving. He is gifted and talented, but struggles with a ferocious loneliness. He is angry and frustrated at how he believes he is mistreated and misunderstood. He begins to talk about how he is treated differently just because he is young, and how he hasn't even been able to find out who is yet before people are trying to change him as a person. He goes on to explain how his teacher, Mr Hoffman, has recognised him and seen him for how he is, unlike the headteacher. I chose this monologue because I really enjoyed the fiercely passionate tone throughout. I also thought choosing a 17 year old character would be ideal, as it really helped me put myself in this characters' shoes. When practicing this monologue, I found that I could relate to this character, as during secondary school I would regularly clash with teachers over disagreements similar to this one.
