In 79 A.D. one of the most famous eruptions of all time happened. The volcano buried Pompeii under a thick layer of ash, the ash was almost 6 meters deep. The dust “poured across the land” like a flood, one witness wrote, and shrouded the city in “a darkness…like the black of closed and unlighted rooms.” Two thousand people died in the Ancient Roman tragedy. When Pompeii was rediscovered in 1748 the discoverers found that Pompeii was left almost entirely intact including the buildings, artifacts and skeletons. Pompeii is super important to our leaning since everything stayed intact, we were able to learn a lot about what life was like back in 79 A.D.
