Working Together
I used this image in a previous project, where my objective was to get parents, teachers, and students to work together. When I began reading "The Dreamkeepers" by Gloria Landson-Billings, this image was one of the first things that came to my mind. The author was not looking for faults in the education system, instead she was determined to find individuals who were doing things right. The author wanted to shine a light on communities, where African American students were being successful by working with their parents and teachers.

According to Landson-Billings research, each teacher she interviewed had unique ways of teaching. However, one of the traits that each of them shared was their emphasis of stability in the classroom. Similar to Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, the eight educators believed in the importance of safety and stability. Their approach was to try and provide a home away from home for their students. Once these basic needs were met, then students would be motivated to learn in their classrooms.

                  Cultural Competence
The eight educators that were described in this book, had a strong focus on developing cultural competence. They felt it was important for their students to be knowledgeable of their own culture, before they learned about the dominant culture that surrounded them. This picture integrates the language of a student who is perhaps bilingual. By embracing the second language at school, then a student can become self-aware, be aware of others, and learn to develop bridging skills.

                Effective Teaching
This image reminded me of the importance of effective teaching. In chapter one, the author makes an important comment about a students' best interest. She states that when an educator truly cares about their students, they show it by the way they teach. An effective teacher, will value the diversity of their students, adapt and modify their instruction, and inspire their students to continue to learn.

                  The Coach
This image reminded me of chapter two in our reading. The book described different patterns in which teachers behave. A teachers behavior could be similar to that of Tutors, General contractors, Custodians, Referral Agents, Conductors, or Coaches. This phrase reminded me of the behavior that I felt was the most helpful for students. This behavior helped share the responsibility of learning between both teachers and students. I think that an educator who behaves like a coach encourages students to constantly try their best.
