In Marilyn Nelson's poem, A Miracle in the Collection plate, the author was living in a time period when the U.S. Fugitive Slave Law was passed, which made any federal marshal or other official who did not arrest an alleged runaway slave liable to a fine of $1,000. The poem states that "Without a goodbye,
James was handcuffed, and shoved on a steamboat
to Baltimore, to be sold—legally!" Law enforcement officials everywhere now had a duty to arrest anyone suspected of being a runaway slave on no more evidence than a claimant’s sworn testimony of ownership. This law led to many free blacks being conscripted into slavery, as they had no rights in court and could not defend themselves against accusations.

He uses imagery such as "your torso would dance from exit wounds" to describe the movements of your body from bullets that have been discharged from the guns of soldiers. Additionally, he includes the line "flames are making their way back through the intricacies of a young boy’s thigh" to share his grandmother's memories of a fire slowly engulfing a young boy, which alludes to the deterioration of Vietnam, which crumbled as people continued to die of unnatural causes.

In Maya Angelou's, The Black Family Pledge The year 2017 seems to be a long way from the treacherous slavery days that my ancestors had to encounter. Being that my history of African dominant has partially been lost due to the racial disparity that has clouded a true sense of who I am. In 2017, I believe that slavery still exists. Not in forms of the physical torture, and chains, as well as the pain. I am referring to the mental and spiritual forms of slavery that still exists today. Suppression of a whole race is nothing uncommon in humanity. Also, it is not new or limited to a single ethnic background. As Maya Angelou agrees in this expressive poem, “The Black Family Pledge” she writes down in poetry my thoughts about not knowing (Understanding) my heritage.

In Claude McKay's poem "The City's Love", the author was living in a time in society when people of color were looked down upon. He's basically describing a moment in his life where he wasn't judged based on the color of his skin. In the poem it reads "Oblivious of the color of my skin, forgetting that I was an alien guest...". This proves that he believes that this is the city's way of showing him "love". I can infer that the majority of the places that the author has lived in he probably didn't experience much acceptance.
