Trust Vs. Mistrust

After talking to my grandmother she said that my mother was

a rather easy baby though a bit stressful because my mother

was her first child. She said that she remembers her being

a very giggly baby. As the text says “People need to trust

the world and the people in it, but they also need to learn

some mistrust to protect themselves from danger” (Martorell 2023).

Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt

This is the toddler stage and when

my mother was little she was very inquisitive and s

he liked learning new things and my grandmother

encouraged her to play and discover. As it says in

the text, “In toddlerhood, the critical theme is

autonomy or a sense of agency and independence.

A child who first successfully developed a sense of

trust would be in a particularly good position to

develop this strength” (Martorell 2023).

Initiative vs. Guilt

This is around the age my mother started

preschool and when she first started she

was a bit of a troublemaker and quickly shaped up

and fit well with her classmates. As it says in the text

“Preschool children can do-and want to do-more and more.

At the same time, they are learning that some of the things

they want to do meet social approval, whereas

others do not” (Martorell 2023).

Industry vs. Inferiority

My mother was always encouraged to try new things, she played piano, she was on her school’s basketball team and she was very outgoing, she thrived in these years. As it says in the text, “If children are unable to obtain the praise of others or lack motivation and self esteem, they may develop a feeling of low self-worth and thus develop a sense of inferiority. This is problematic because during middle childhood, children must learn skills valued in their society” (Martorell 2023).

Identity vs. Role Confusion

During this stage of her life my mother was attending church and youth group and that is what has shaped a lot of her adult life. Also this is when she met my father and they got married. She had some great role models in her life not only for faith but marriage too. As it says in the text, “Adolescents who resolve the identity crisis satisfactorily develop the virtue of fidelity: sustained loyalty, faith, or a sense of belonging to a loved one or friends and companions” (Martorell 2023).

Intimacy vs. Isolation

My mother was married at 20 so this part of her life was centered around intimacy and starting a family. At this point, she had moved out and was living with her husband and had 10 kids. As stated in the text, “According to Erikson, a man is not capable of real intimacy until after he has achieved a stable identity, whereas women define themselves through marriage and motherhood” (Martorell 2023).

Generativity vs. Stagnation

This is the stage that my mother has just entered as she just turned 40 and is raising kids so she is in the generativity side on this one. Her life has meaning and she feels fulfilled. As it says in the text, “Mature adult is concerned with establishing and guiding the next generation or else feels personal impoverishment” (Martorell 2023).

Ego Integrity vs. Despair

My mother has not entered this stage of life yet but because of the path she has taken thus far I can imagine that she would fall into the ego integrity side. As it says in the text, “An elderly person achieves acceptance of own life, allowing acceptance of death, or else despairs over the inability to relive life” (Martorell 2023).
