Nuclear Energy

Natural gas and oil are the most used sources of energy in the world. From 1859 when oil was first discovered it has been pulled from the ground at an alarming rate. The world has been pulling up oil so fast oil can’t replenish itself in time. We have taken for granted the mass amounts of natural gases and oil and we didn’t stop to think about when it would run out. We have 100 years until it all runs out and must find a new source of energy. Also, Natural gas and oil are changing and negatively affecting the environment. As we get older the problems that Natural gases and oil hold will get worse and worse. Nuclear energy can solve both of these issues. Starting in 1951 the first Nuclear Power was used for energy. Every country that can afford Nuclear Energy should use it as an energy source-doing so isn’t only better for the environment, but also cost-effective, and won’t run out in the long term. As the world burns oil and natural gases at a rapid rate, we must look at a long-term source of energy to prepare for the energy outage that will happen in the next 100 years, Nuclear Energy will fill in the spot for energy.-Matthew Miller

Tennis Intro

In 2019, the US Open in Queens, New York, drew an all-time record crowd: 737,872 fans passed through the gates of the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. I remember joining a line snaking through half the grounds to — fingers crossed — get a seat in the 10,000-person Louis Armstrong Court. There, packed in like sardines, atmosphere was raucous, wild, and electric. Fast-forward twelve months, and such a scenario seems almost impossible. At the 2020 Open was played in a bubble before empty stands; the 2021 Australian Open allowed limited fans (before a mid-tournament lockdown) and forced players into strict two week quarantines. As the world begins to cautiously open up again, players and fans alike debate the possibility of a professional tour in a truly global sport. The mens and womens professional tennis tours should establish 3 “bubble sites” at which they will play all 60+ tournaments — doing so is not only economical and practical, but necessary to maintain public health during a global pandemic. -- Piergalski

sports pay

Nick Jurgensen

For many years women have been fighting for equal pay. If a male had the same job as a woman 100 years ago the male would make more than a female. This is fair in the normal jobs for women to get paid the same as a male if they are doing the exact same amount of work as they are they should make the same. Recently women have been talking and bringing up that they make much less than men do in sports. This is due to the fact that men are more popular in sports for the most part. There are some expectations for weird sports but men get more views on tv and streaming media than women. Women have been arguing they should get equal pay in sports for years they get paid less than men do because they are not as popular. This is unfair because women’s sports are not as popular as men’s sports.

Social Media and its unconfirmed information

In between December 2019 and May of 2020 social media became a hot topic for fact-checking both politically and covid related. Misinformation was widespread on these two topics and social media outlets had to do something and respond. Social Media companies should fact check it’s users' posts. The Social Media world has become a big source of information for many people around the world, and often it is false, unconfirmed information-that leads to harmful things for its users. It is important to know the true facts so users can get accurate information, and although opposers say it is a violation of the first amendment right of free speech, these privately-owned companies have a right to fact check to help the public stay safe and informed. -Saida Rangel

prison reform

Prison reform has been around for many years and is a widely discussed topic. In the 19th century, prisons were being built only to house inmates and prevent people from committing crimes. Since building these prisons, people have struggled on how to properly punish criminals and to what extent their punishments should be. Inmates in these prisons were forced to do hard labor and live in extremely harsh conditions. Not long after, the goal of these prisons became the rehabilitation of inmates. Unfortunately, prisons are inhumane and often forget the fact that prisoners are still human and deserve rights. Rehabilitation during and after prison is not only important for the people in prison, it helps everybody involved. This is necessary for the inmates in prison to develop life skills, decrease incarceration rate, and make programs available to inmates who need it. As the world struggles with prison reform, the rehabilitation programs can be a great first step to achieving better outcomes for inmates. - Erika Taylor

Wearing a uniform in schools has always been a controversial issue, especially in public schools. While most private schools/religious schools wear a uniform people are still trying to get many public schools on board. I know several people who went to religious school and they said “You just throw on the same clothes you wore yesterday and that is it, no thinking required.” Instead of spending fifteen to twenty minutes standing in front of your closet trying to figure out what you are going to wear, all you have to do is put on something that you know everyone is going to wear while showing school spirit. Now with COVID, people wear the same masks over and over why can we not just do the same thing with clothes for the school day? -Raelyn

I joined the swim team in the year 2020 and it was a lot different than 2019. Before Covid hit, we didn’t have to worry about being socially distant, wearing a mask, or checking our temperature when we entered the pool deck. However, when Covid struck, our coaches had to become very strict on being socially distant and wearing our masks. The team now has to start at opposite ends of the pool to maintain our distance. College sports should be canceled due to Covid. With the pandemic going on, athletes should sit out a whole season so they can stay socially distant from other athletes. Athletes shouldn’t have to deal with Covid because it is impossible to stay socially distant. -Alex

Better energy

Recently billionaires have been focusing on space and commercializing space travel. People have been dreaming about exploring space for as long as we knew of its existence. And now we are closer than ever with people like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos wanting commercial space travel to be a thing soon. But while they are focusing on that they are completely overlooking what they could be doing and what would be a much better use of their resources now. With there being talk about putting charging stations on every block for the people who use electric cars, this brings up an issue. The fact that renewable energy is not nearly as effective as fossil fuels and the types of resources that we have been using for decades now. Elon Musk and other incredibly rich people should be focusing on making the current technologies better instead of focusing on starting space travel. This will make the planet a much longer-lived resource that we can continue using without needing to move the more we make current energy sources available the more we can This is important because as soon as we make the current energy sources much cleaner and the renewable sources more efficient then we can focus on something as ambitious as commercial space travel.- Ty

Job Losses from New Energy

On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden signed an executive order revoking the permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline. This executive order instantly put thousands of workers out of work. If you think about it, it is very hard to just lose your job and stop making an income. If you or a parent were to be put out of work, it may be very difficult to keep up with your payments especially with the global pandemic going on right now. This is a big problem for people working in the oil industry with even more jobs on the fence right now. Instead of instantly shutting down the pipeline, Biden should take more time to have a plan for the people getting put out of jobs. Just from a moral standpoint, it seems right to give the people who have been working the opportunity to get back on their feet and have time to find a new job before completely losing income during a pandemic. Joe Biden should consider the workers in the oil industry to make sure they have support for transferring into renewable energy. By giving them support, it will help people who’ve worked in the oil industry for years get back on their feet after losing, for some, their life-time career. While inevitably, we’re going towards more energy efficiency, we should make sure people losing full-time jobs have more time and help for a new plan for work. - Oscar
