Our school is for parents too! We encourage families to be actively involved in the school, which is an important part of the school’s success. The services and expertise that parents provide allow teachers and staff to focus on children, while also controlling the rising cost of education. What parents get in return is invaluable—a way to be directly involved in their child’s school, as well as a chance to meet other KMS parents.

KMS parent, Sanae Honda, is volunteering some of her time to teach Japanese to our Elementary students.

Each family is asked to contribute 20 hours of volunteer
time as part of their enrollment commitment. Opportunities for volunteer activity include listening to emerging readers, driving on field trips, helping with publicity, assisting with our annual auction, cleaning up the grounds each spring and fall, and many other essential tasks.

Many of our parents enrich the classrooms with special presentations on their own cultural and religious traditions, occupations and/or special interest.

-Open house

For Primary children (ages 3-6), the day usually begins with circle time, for sharing songs, classroom news, and often a group lesson. From about 9:00 to 10:45, the children have an independent work cycle in which they are free to choose a work that interests them. The head teacher gives individual lessons, while the assistant teacher is there to guide anyone who needs assistance. After a brief second circle, it is time for recess! Children who stay for the afternoon have lunch and rest time followed by a second work cycle. The schedule is similar for Elementary students, but they have more responsibility for completing their work plan and also have other opportunities, such as writers’ circle, class meeting, book groups, outdoor classroom, ans special instruction in music, art, fitness, and Spanish.
