André Mare was endeavoring to demonstrate a message that men who suffered even subsequently of the war faced anxiety and turmoil. The image conveyed men, who's faces have been blurred, to express deadness - a feeling of loss in their emotions as the war wrecked their tranquility. The men are for the most part to some degree, are injured, which implies that these men have gotten together - on account of their comprehension of torment and experience.

What are the values of this image to historians studying conflict?

One value that this image has for historians is that it reinforces the idea that nobody came back from the war unscathed and that the men in the image are some of the lucky ones. The painting depicts three men, two of whom had to get their legs amputated. This could have been the result of landmines or uncontrollable trench foot, but either way, it shows historians the kind of extreme suffering that soldiers faced on the battlefield. This image includes a veteran that has been blinded, most likely thanks to gas. This reveals to historians how brutal the First World War was as it was fought before restrictions were put in place on unethical weapons like blinding gas.

In the art piece by André Mare, world war one is condemned, as we see three wounded men to show the suffering and the damage that the war has caused to people. And that even as a soldier who survived the war they still have to live with injuries and amputations every day, a lot of the men had their faces disoriented by weapons and so, therefore, they faced discrimination in the public. War in some areas, the soldiers are praised and seen as brave men when they come home from war, however many of those are left with many disorders such as anxiety, PTSD and trauma.
