Los primeros restos de fósiles de ballenas los encontraron hace 52 millones de años pero se remota que su origen fue desde hace 60 millones de años.

Las aulagas son propias de las zonas costeras del sudeste de España, Islas Canarias y noroeste de África llegando por el sur hasta Mauritania.

   Los burgados tienen la concha con forma de espiral de color verde-púrpura con manchas oscuras. Suelen estar en las zonas rocosas de las Islas Canarias, asi mismo este burgao, como también se le conoce, se encuentra en Madeira y Cabo Verde.
  En Canarias, sirve de alimento y su concha ha sido utilizada como elemento decorativo. Hoy en día, su extracción está regulada ya que en el pasado se llegó prácticamente a la exterminación de esta especie en algunas áreas. 
   Su tamaño medio es entre 2,3 y 2,5 cm de media, más ancho que alto.

Habitat y nicho ecológico:
El Chucho Negro es un animal marino cuya vida transcurre tranquilamente en las aguas saladas, esta especie se encuentra distribuida en los mares del Atlántico Occidental.
Este animal generalmente se alimenta de pequeños peces como los alevines y los camarones o también de algunas algas.

Relaciones interespecíficas:
Depredación: El depredador (Chucho Negro) mata a la presa (los peces) para alimentarse.
